Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

Do you regret being too loyal?

I’ve been here for a long time and only now I am starting to regret that I didn’t switch more companies when I had the opportunity. It’s too late now.
Here it's become impossible to find any fulfillment other than money. Milking a cow is good, but I'm getting bored. I’m counting the days until retirement.

Loyal to what? Loyal to Shell as a company, NO. Loyal to a line manager or a senior leader, YES.

A senior leader once accused me of “just being a warm body” and wanted to give me a low rating even though I did more work than any of my peers who tend to “show off” their work even if it was menial. I learned quickly that it doesn’t matter how loyal you are to Shell as a company, in the end the manager/senior leader is the one that can make or break your career.

I almost left twice in a long career. I don’t regret staying, but you need to find jobs in different fields that you find interesting and you can excel. I like to say I have had many careers, but one employer. Fir me, staying long term was a great decision.

It’s worth it to be loyal. Even if it doesn’t work out at Shell, loyalty eventually wins the day.
