Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

Not all management is horrible

I’ve read a lot of threads where people are bashing on their managers. I’m sure there are plenty of them in the company that leave a lot to be desired. However, in my store our managers (that’s right, plural) have all been exemplary. They’re all great people who do their jobs and help us do ours. I know I will get criticized for posting this and that’s fine. Not all managers are as bad as being stated and I for one am thankful to have the management that we have in my location.

I have also worked in 2 locations. Always part time. My first store closed 5 years ago. It was a very small store, but much loved in the community. Those managers did everything needed to keep us going. I was able to transfer to a nearby location (Large store) with the nearly identical job. Very different experience there when I arrived. So many managers and red badges all over the place, but not much help, or any interest in providing it. Fast forward a few years, I am now flex after being laid off during a very large layoff 3 yrs ago. The managers now are fewer in number, but work very hard. Very responsive to a need for help. The AST is wonderful. I hope Macys appreciates their hard work.

I've worked at two different locations. I've worked retail off and on for about 13 years. Most of that time I worked as a part timer until about 4 years ago, when I was offered a full-time position. Eventually I joined the management team so moved to the other location. I feel that for the most part, the managers at both locations worked hard, except for maybe one or two who didn't put much effort. You could tell which ones had been with the company for many years because they cared about their area and their workers worked hard for them. They were professional and treated their employees with respect. Some areas had more drama but that was between workers, mainly in the commission areas. The last two years have been tougher on everyone and with fewer sales managers, the remaining managers have more on their plate. Of the ones that are left at my store, there may be one sales manager who doesn't pull their weight. They either don't want to learn more or they just don't have the drive to. Another is very new, and time will tell if they will make it.
At the first store, the store manager was easy going, seemed friendly enough, and didn't get stressed out, to the point where it affected the sales managers. The second store, I can easily say that the store manager is one of the hardest working managers I've known. He is not afraid to get his hands dirty, even works the register if needed for several hours. I think he really cares and takes pride in his work.

I take great exception to the poster who said all managers are lazy. You come to my store and see how hard those managers work, especially now that there's so few of them. The workload is tough and they are getting it done, but it's taking its toll.

I have never feel the need to post on this site, that is until now. I've had bad and good managers, and at times wanted to exit Macy's. My current manager is absolutely amazing. She really knows how to manage each personalities. With managing three core departments in the store, she has a lot of personalities to deal with. We are very fortunate to have her guide us day in and day out. So, YES Virginia, kind and caring managers still exist throughout Macy's. I'm sorry some of you have had bad experiences with your managers.

You’re lucky! Ours stayed in their office and it was so hard to get them to come out, even if it was a customer issue. Most only came out to shame you on not opening enough credit cards.

I always felt that the older managers were fine. But the ones hired through college recruitment were not very good. They felt they were better than the associates. They never lasted very long though...
