Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Cost of projects

Someone mentioned their vision of how workers can be saved.

Rather than cut headcount, the Management should look into how to reduce cost on Projects and Maintenance. The cost of Projects are exorbitantly high, coming from the time when I was working in the 80’s. if someone can compare the cost of projects done then and similar projects, you can see what I am saying.

c/ p from thread Exxonmobil Singapore is laying off employees. How realistic is it that this could be the solution?

Thank you for your comment. Sure I understand inflation but not at the rate I have seen. Salaries now when compared to the 80’s have not gone up by similar multiples. I believe materials cost too. Governments everywhere has focused on Productivity improvement. Agree that Costs will definitely go up over time but not at this rate. The increases could be many other reasons and I was merely hilighting that the Company need to scrutinise the whole process and I personally believe (and have seen) there are areas where things can be done better. I hope I am wrong in this aspect but I my experience tells me otherwise.

I have come across a Field Pilot plant over 6 months, not the full size and using the contractor’s old equipment that came up to USD 5M (yes, million and not a typo error). Lots of modifications needed to meet the stringent EM standards vs industry standards. We need to operate safely and not blow up the plant but for Pilot/Test run and for a short period, is it necessary? Some may agree, some may not. But this is my opinion and it comes from my very long working experience with the Company.

Cheers.

Do you not understand what inflation is? No duh it costs more today versus the 80s. You aren't even using the same basis for comparison.

Also, removing many cost controls means less headcount as well..

The comment came from me.... to clarify, this is one of many areas of improvement that could improve the Company’s profitability and competitiveness and this will not lead to the current state that the Company has to cut headcount to reduce costs, while hiding that the purging is due to ‘poor performance’ employees. EM has always pride that they hire the best. What happened here? Do the other sites also see this trend? Some examples are the construction of storage tanks, modifications and additions of facilities, even conducting test runs, etc..... Cost control of Projects are also very loose, especially those that are out-sourced to Engineering Contractors.

There are other areas as well and this is one area that “pained” me when I was with the Company
