Merit Increases at VMware?

Hi, I’m new to VMware and just heard from a colleague that there are no merit increases? Is this true? Any suggestions or tips on an equity distribution and raise?

Zane's recent email seems to suggest salary and promotions are resuming. Don't let all this FUD posted on this thread get to you. If you don't get a raise, find another job and then quit this one after you have something set. VMware found a great excuse in covid not to give raises but many people still got promotions last year...

Pat leaving will be viewed as the death blow to what once was a great company

The focus on cost-cutting-above-all-else set the destiny.

VMWare is soon to be a dinosaur. The management (what's left) doesn't have a clue. They focus on SJW c-ap, the environment and any and everything except how to win in the marketplace. Pat leaving will be viewed as the death blow to what once was a great company

Best days of vmware are already behind. It is a sinking ship. Indian politics at best. Check Glassdoor and see the sense of the culture, racism, toxic, favoritism.

It is across the board. Promotions are based on ethnicity.

I won't speak to the alleged racism and preference for Indians, because I don't feel adequately informed to do so; however, I can absolutely speak to what I have observed in more than 10 years of working here. As others have already said, this company's best days are behind them. Things like promotions, merit raises, and stock awards have steadily declined every year; aside from a few exceptions where someone had a political connection. Since Covid, they are almost non-existent. The company is now a bloated beauracracy that has lost focus on building great products, and is almost entirely distracted by administrativia, over-regulation (most of it self-induced), D&I initiatives, social causes du jour, and various other means of virtue signaling. None of those are bad things in and of themselves, but they have become the primary focus at VMware instead of the beneficial side-effects of building a great commercial enterprise that they should be.

If you are new to VMware, then congratulations on getting a job that can pay you well for the time being and also provide a great number of resources for developing yourself. My advice is to make the most of those resources and position yourself to move on to a more innovative and lucrative company within 2-3 years (5 years at the very max).

That's for sure that VMware is all filled up with identity politics, social justice warrioring and diversity and inclusion. It is not focused on what matters, which is retaining good employees, building competitive products, customer satisfaction and profitability.

Vmware is just never gonna be fixed. A sinking ship managed and dominated by Indian thugs. Someday, lawsuits of racism will dry it up.

Watch it sink or jump off like so many did.

Fill your stomach with hollow EPIC2 values instead of merit increases. This company is going down the drain too quickly. The focus and priorities is on empty multi year road map, environment, BLM. We talk about everything that is not important to a corporate entity. Hardly is there any talk about execution, competing with other top companies , increasing revenue or building great products. Take this from a decade+ veteran who has built great products and rubbed shoulders with great people who are mostly and rightfully gone.

The Key is to get your money before you get in here because once you are in the merit increases are almost nothing. In fact, Since covid they have been nothing.

There is no way at vmware to measure performance.

This is a due entirely to managerial incompetence, not racism.

Haha.. you funny.

There is no way at vmware to measure performance. It is done this way on purpose to ensure the continued dominance of Indians. To hire more H1B Indians in favor of non Indians. And to give bonuses and promotions to Indians.

I left vmware when I saw how deep this favoritism and how toxic it is. Find a company that value you for your work and not your ethnicity.

Cheers

Last time salary raise happened 2 years back. Don’t expect much.

There are merit and COLA raises. Generally nothing to write home about (a little above inflation), but they do happen.

A lot depends on your manager and how you compare to other team members.

Just do you best to avoid a layoff. Don’t worry about that other stuff.
