Thread regarding Sears layoffs

For the Sears people who got laid off: where are you now?

Did you find new jobs?
Is there anyone who got lucky after being laid off?
Is there anyone who experienced a real debacle after layoff?
How are you doing?

I’m sick of these lists of shops that are closing soon. Don’t get me wrong, I find these lists useful, but I don’t need any list to know that my store will shut down sooner or later because the toxic atmosphere in the store says a lot. I am expecting a layoff and in the meantime I am trying my best to find another option.

I got laid off from Hoffman in 2018 at 63 years old after 45 years with Sears. Too old to start a new job so it was a rough two years until I hit 65. Once I hit 65 and stated collecting S.S and Medicare, things got better. It’s still tight but better.

I'm at Walmart full time making $16 an hour with a consistent 32 to 35 hour workweek. I am in charge of restocking laundry and cleaning supplies. I am off every Friday and Sunday. Management here is ok and pretty much lets me do my job without interference. We get quarterly bonuses fairly regularly from $200 to $500 a quarter depending on the store performance. Benefit are okay, about the same as Sears although I do pay less for better health insurance.

Does Walmart's 401(k) pay matching contributions?

Sears had a 401(k) but they were too cheap to make any contributions

I am working at Walmart. It's Ok, but it is not Sears. Miss my co-workers. I have been at Walmart for 3 years. My Sears closed in April 2017. I am getting 40 hours a week, hired on as a full-time associate, great 401(K) making over $14 hour, health benefits also. Ok job.

There are all kinds of jobs out there if all you need is a couple bucks coming in, but what I need is benefits. Screwed.

I believed, and hoped, for a long time that we'd eventually go back to HE. I got officially released in October so I've been looking, but there are a LOT of people looking. Good luck everyone.

I'm just sitting at home collecting unemployment for the moment. Best part about it is that I can jag off to pron all day and the government gets billed! What a way to live!

Teaching marketing and business courses at a grad school, using Lampert as an archetypal example of how to fail at retail.

I didn't really find a new job, American Freight bought us out and what an amazing change. Inventory to sell! A customer service department that's actually useful! Appliances and mattresses that arrive in less than four months! We were so worried when Lampert bought us out, but unlike many, we were sold and we got out of his id–tic mitts. I'm sure every single outlet would be closed down bankrupt today if Eddie were still running them.

I'm still collecting unemployment. The government handouts are suffice for me to pay my bills and I have not raid my saving just yet. I'm already over fifty years of ages so looking for work at this age will be a wasting time for me. Very few hiring kids will give people at my age a chance. They rather hired people from oversea that barely can speak English than to hire old people. Not a pessimistic thought but a reality I have come to accept. I'm glad that I saved like a crazy grandma when I was younger.
So I just relax while they are paying me back what I have contributed for the last 30 years. When the unemployment money stop coming in I will move to a Central America country or SE Asia country and live off my life saving until I can collect SS. When I reach a full age of 75 or no longer can hike or travel I'm just going to drive down a cliff somewhere. So pandemic or whatever you guys will call, is a bless for me to evaluate my life what is important. To me it is a simple life and enjoy it. Why going back to work if I don't have to?

I can't believe anyone thinks sitting back and collecting unemployment is a good strategy. When your "vacation" is over and you're scrambling to find a job, you'll wish you had been looking all along. You're the reason so many states have made getting UI so difficult. So then when people desperately need it, they have a hard time getting it. Great work ethic.

I was a QMT in northern NY, Left in 13, I saw what uncle eddie was doing and said bye bye, I am now a Facilities Manager, Can't find anybody who wants to work now, all sitting back collecting unemployment.

I don't understand how sears/kmarts are still open, good luck everyone, when this is over you need to move on, they're just going to close it when the real estate prices go back up but they may never and uncle eddie coast a lot of jobs for a lot of good people.

Please provide detailed definition of "got lucky".

I don't want to assume anything as part of my response.

Build a network now. Get in touch with friends, family, ex-coworkers or others in the industry with similar roles. Knowing people you can contact when the time comes will really help shorten your time off. Best wishes to you!

Why not just sit back and collect unemployment? Biden is about to bump it up to $400 over state allotment. Prolly a lot more than you’re making now.

Landed a job at Walmart, but a lot of my ex-coworkers are still looking. Not a lot of options at my location.
