from working at M for a while i start to pick up on what is going to happen next..
I worked in women shoes and we all thought commission would go but didnt know when..
the year was 2016 everything was great , sales up , commission was good place was rock n rolling,,.
then 2017 came... by oct of 2017 long time commission associates was being fired left and right... it all started with one person in Oct of 2017... by the finale weeks of xmas 2017 a associates who worked there in shoes for 23 years was fired two days before xmas.. the next day another women shoes associate was let go.. there was now only 4 long term shoe people left.. we was all nervous..by feb 2 more let go for bogus reasons ( discounting , customer issues) a former sales supervisor texted me and asked who was left.. I just said me and another associate out of everyone who has been here for long time.. ( i was there for 7.5 years ) the sales super told me that we was both next to go and that they are looking for any reason to fire us.. this sales sup told me that the other associates will go first.. ( this is a sales sup who left and started to text me )by June of 2018 I was the only person left with no runners, ringers or help... i ran the whole show and nobody new they hired wanted to work in shoes... i was alone for 8 months... useless shoe manager kept saying ill get you help.. and maybe 5 times out of that 8 months i had a ringer or a runner..i managed to make it to xmas 2018 completely exhausted , wiped out and gave blood sweat and tears to the job... i thought i was safe being i made it a full year.. 2019 rolls in and started to get younger adults in dept.. by march of 2019 we had a full staff again .... June of 2019 they told us commission will change to a tier level.. sell 150k get 1.5 commission 250k get 2.5 etc
so to get back to 10 to 12 percent which i started you would have to hit a million a year. i took a LOA being i was so worked to death and dislocated my ribs, had two rotory cuff tears in both shoulders, my feet look like it was put into a meat grinder on high for 3 days straight.. I had cuts and bruises all over my legs and body.. i felt at any moment i was gonna drop dead on the sales floor from exhaustion.. hence why I need to see a doctor.. I was out for 3 months and came back .and notice the dept had sunken into complete shambles as no one new cared.. it was horrible and worse than i left.. this new commission really s—ed and if you sold 3k a day you only saw 30 dollars if that from 8 hours of busting your butt.. Now it dawned on me ... everyone who worked there in the past was let go because they did not want to pay anyone of them a high hourly plus the new commission .. all them long term shoe people was going to be making 20-30 a hr hence the light went on... they fired everyone before they turned the switch off of commission onto hourly... they did not want to pay any long term excellent sales people money.. I was the only one left... and they began getting on my case for breathing weird...long story short.. I made it thru till June 2020 and was giving a package and sent on my way to a better life ... what clues to look for from my story is this... macys has 2-3 years ahead on what and how they will change their biz.
Commission is officially gone in shoes as of feb 2021.. hence why they wanted to fire everyone before it happened... they only wanna pay barely anything for the most stressful job you will ever have in your life..!!
Here is some "clues " i picked up along the way to make it thru ( if you want to stay) in this stressful environment.
1:. Lp Is not there to stop shop lifters they are there to set you up , make stuff up and nail you on any reason under the sun which has to do with changing future biz and in between they will get some real shoplifters. Lp will also put out money on registers, put credit cards /gift cards around registers to see if you take them.. they will also plant things in stock rooms , bathrooms, or anywhere else you are. . they will listen in on your customer phone calls, , you will hear a click when you know they are listening in.. they will follow you around the store keeping 20 feet from you and watch you like a sniper..
2:. changing of store Managers is a ploy to fire other managers, lp and associates , the new store manager will fire someone right away to show they mean biz.. sales managers do this as well. its all BS.
3: if you noticed certain position are being let go in a course of a year.. that position is done..
4: Promotion is hidden as a demotion . or quite firing.. they will put you in a position they know you cant handle to pull the plug on you or that " promotion" in one year only to find that jobs was cut
5:if they move to another store and break everyone up... then someone amongst you is stealing and they are trying to figure out who
6: Lp break rules and codes left and right... everyday all day.. that is a sure sign that the store manager is letting them or ops/vs is letting them.. if they want you gone they will make it happen
7: Lp pulls audits on everyone in the store during down time to see if you are doing the right thing.. if there is alot of discounts they will run it by your manager and if its ok ( if your manager has your back) then nothing will happen to you.. if the manager did ok the discounts for customer reasons and doesn't like you... your done.
8: you will get random " customer calls" from corporates to see how well you are on the phone for orders.. this is a secret shopper type thing.. be professional and outgoing as possible on every call..
9: corporates does secrets shoppers . they will come in a try to push your buttons..
10: remember a raise is just one foot out the door at big ole M.. M store all have a budget and if your position is over or they can hire 2/3 people to do your job for less.. your done !...
11: Morning meetings is a cult gathering " to excite the troops" as they put it.. all it is a time wasting event . its also to see how you act ... if your dont put your two cents in they think your not outgoing enough to work there..
12: last and not least... Please do not drink the kool aid..... M is trying to get you sell your soul to the devil... do not drink the kool aid...
remember everything is 2 years in advance... hence all the changes coming.. store managers, ops/vs. Lp, being let go left in right... look for the signs... better yet look for a better career !
