BP has announced that they are doing away with 9/80s. Will the same happen at Shell? Will the full industry follow?

"9/80 is an American thing, stop whining!" Says the euro with 6 weeks of vacation. As the industry contracts, you'll be working 9 or 10 hours a day to keep your job anyway. Why give you every other Friday off?

9/80 is a questionable practice in a white collar job environment especially during Covid WFH. It is a privilege and not a right. Be happy you still have a job!
I have not experienced office staff being more productive under 9/80 but plenty of examples of less productivity. We had the flexibility to start the day early and end early or start later and end later all on the honor system. Many quickly figured out they could routinely wander in late and wander out early. That practice has gone on for so many years that it has become institutionalized. Also, how many schedule their personal business (doctor, dentist, auto repair, coaching/kids activities etc.) on their 9/80 day off like was originally intended?
That'd be the nail in the coffin. I would work even less.
In preparation for Reshape I've already reduced my hours to good 20 hours per week. And somehow I still manage to accomplish 3x of my !diot coworkers. The bright future of the industry, and this mismanaged company!!!
As long as we continue to work from home, I am happy to work on any schedule
9/80 is an American thing. Honestly is it the end of the world if it goes away? Probably not but I also can’t see what cost savings they’ll get by getting rid of it. Just be glad you still have a job. It’s not going to get better anytime soon.
