Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

Manager playing golf on Friday during work hours

Tried to reach my manager this morning for help with an account. The guy answers the phone and I can hear someone talking in the background about tee times and who is up first. Then he quickly says "call — and see if he can help you, I'm working on another project". We have a lot of good workers being tossed out like trash who give Staples 100% everyday, yet we have a manager on a Friday morning not doing what he is paid to do. And when you need help with a STAPLES CLIENT, you get pawned off to another employee. How did this guy become a manager? It's Friday, I guess his weekend in underway while on the clock.

There's always a good chance the manager did tell their team that they were taking a PTO day and this person missed it. Lord knows there are PLENTY of sales reps that seem to believe reading emails, paying attention on conference calls, etc is OPTIONAL. I thought reading was fundamental....wouldn't know it based on field sales behavior.

I'm pretty sure the manager can deduce who posted this if they read this board. They ask themselves, a)was it Friday b) was I on a golf course c)was it morning d)did I get a call from my employee while at the golf course.

They just need remember who called.

If someone is taking a day off OR is not scheduled to be in yet as it's morning AND takes the time to answer the phone while at a golf course AND provides guidance on how you can get support in their absence, that is a great boss.

I have no idea if that's the case, but without the other persons response we'll never know.

We have a game on our team and we call it how many vacations will our manager take this year? No matter how challenged our business is, this person will use up every last ounce of vacation while the rest of the team quivers with worry that we may be penalized for even taking a day off.

What a disrespectful comment for those that show up every day and work hard for their paycheck.

This company is such a dumpster fire. My managers are actually trying to save our team but the ppl above them keep piling on the work and provide no assistance what do ever. The ppl at the top are just riding this wave until it dries up and everyone below them is suffering. The fact that there are still id–ts out there buying from staples is beyond me

Reach out to their boss if the Manager was not scheduled to be off. This is someone that is taking advantage and is not supporting their team.

Reading the original post it is clear that the associate who called their Manager during work hours was looking for assistance and their manager made a poor decision to take advantage of the company and their team by playing golf without taking a day off officially. Why this post is surprising is what’s surprising to me. Unfortunately this is not the first time I have heard of this type of behavior and how disrespectful to pick up the phone and not help your salesperson. This manager not leading the way and with so many lay offs- they should be ashamed. But guarantee they don’t care not the first tee time that you can be sure.

Just something to consider. I see a lot of people making comments about managers, just to take a chance here.....A manager of a sales team I would expect would let his team members know if he/she was taking the day off. It seems hard to be a leader if your followers have no idea what you are doing. In this case, a guy seems to be playing golf and someone needs help. If the employee knew the manager was off work for the day I don't think he would have been bothered. The comment/reply with "not your concern" is not something you would expect from a leader.

Who said he was on the clock? Maybe he took a day off and doesn't want to be bothered by you. I don't want to be called on my day off. What time off he arranges with his boss is not your concern.
