I believe a lot of people had a strong feeling that their job was going to be cut, but they didn’t think it was going to happen as fast as it happened, as someone already mentioned. I have a colleague who kept saying that he had to find an alternative, but he was not actively looking for a new job because he thought there was still time. He still hasn’t been able to find a job because it’s a lot harder to find a job when you lose your job. Moral of the story: never procrastinate thinking you have more time.

Exactly and the core folks are the ones they always target. If you have a plan B take it or else expect to start training your replacement from a 3rd party vendor.
