Seniority doesn’t matter. I was laid off after working there 20 years.
I wish more people would realize this. I know of so many who think being here the longest means they're safe when the opposite is true. If your longevity is reflected in your pay, you're actually at much more risk than any of us to be let go. Accept this and prepare accordingly.
I just found out recently that my former store is still doing lay offs even though they barely have anyone working there now and they just released anyone who's been with the company starting from 16 years. Bad decision on these higher ups with no intelligence cause now they're really stuck with those who don't care about the work and truthfully not capable of handling the heavy duty assignments like the ones who have been laid off. Although my former store owns the property they're at I give them another year before they go out of business cause in the surrounding areas there's been about 5 popular retails that already closed for good.
That is why a company like Macys needs a union. The people in the union stores were treated much more fairly than the non union stores. They were offered options and it went by seniority. Non union stores are at the mercy of new managers without ethics and most of them disregard career retail people as a burden because they know more than them treat the customers well and knew what quality was.

Seniority matters, but in the opposite way most people would expect. The longer you've been there, the more money you make, the more benefits you have, the more you cost the company. = The more likely you'll be cut for "payroll" reasons.
It's much more cheaper to pay someone 50 cents above minimum wage than to pay you a decent living. That's business I guess.
I was laid off with almost 20 years. Experience and good to excellent reviews with pay raises gets you laid off. So bad and backwards. Your good work ethic, making goals, good attendance, etc. gets you raises. And then they don’t want you anymore because you were and still could be a good worker who they gave raises to.
its all about how much you make and how the store budget is .. if you don't fit in the budget you will get axed.. doesn't matter your numbers or how long you been there.. its how much you get paid.
True, Im living proof. Been with M many years & was the first called back after Covid. But I was in the massive June cuts a couple months later. In returning (rehired), I had to take a huge paycut. :(
