Interviewing for position at Optum - Looking for feedback

So doing some research on Optum as I got a call back from resume submission and found this board - wow - didn't have the first impression they were a revolving door (simultaneous layoff and hiring) - sorry to see some of these comments here - just curious how most of you started with optum - entry - mid level / junior roles?

anybody here in fraud waste or abuse department? curious what actual work week hours are for salaried? was hoping this might be a challenging / engaging opportunity vs. basically a glorified & overtitled repetitive data entry job

kinda a red flag to see so many positive reviews on glassdoor just covering just the last three months - they definitely don't seem authentic ( but that is almost all "review" type services

Nothing was ever a 'good fit' there. It was cesspool of corruption and hyper capitalism

Thank you to everyone for your input - after doing my background into the company and getting a better idea of the position during the interview, it was pretty obvious the position wasn't a good fit . I wish you all the very best and good luck in getting out of there.

Exactly, that 1.5 "raise" is barely a COLA. It's embarrassing that so many are corporate simps and have Stockholm syndrome. The Friday donut or pizza slice is another manipulation to entice the slaves to work harder in the vile us empire

That 1.5% increase didn’t even keep up the the increase in the employee portion of the health insurance. All slaves to this employer. The lucky ones may get a free donut or a pizza pie a couple times a year from their manager.

The 1.5% "raise" didn't even keep up with COLA. You got a pay decrease.

I worked there for over 20 years. Loved most of it, but the company priorities changed, my manager changed and it all went to hell. I would take a job here again if I needed a job, but I would always keep in mind that whether you like the job or not, tomorrow things may change. I wouldn't leave a current job to go to Optum though.

And negotiate your salary to your satisfaction 71up front because you may never get a measurable raise. I felt lucky the years I got 1.5% but that was almost always exceeded by the increase in the cost of benefits. So I actually made less money year over year.

Oh yes. Knew of a department that was terming all races except the VPs race and only hiring his race. Every knew it. Can’t hide that. A discrimination wrongful termination case was filed by a former employee and that did end the VPs employment. But it was done very quietly and rumor is he was paid quite well to leave and testify on the company’s behalf. I hear he still does consulting work for the company.

There was some gangstalking there too. Let the buyer/potential employee beware.

unless you enjoy corporate buck dancing, perhaps, there's other 'opportunities' out there.

I am hoping for a layoff soon! Run and run fast! Do not trust this company!

One awesome thing I’ve noticed is that the benefits are insanely cheap compared to a majority of other companies.
Standard 40 hour week within 7a-6p local time depending on wether you get a micromanager who tries to dictate your hours.
I’ve actually been to therapy over this place. I am truly hoping to be laid off as the possibility has always loomed overhead and I’ve been searching elsewhere for nearly a year with no luck-I feel stuck due largely to the pandemic.

There is no work/life balance. If you don’t do your work no one else will and they’ll threaten/complain when you fall behind.

You can only carry 40 hours of PTO over each year and their inclement weather policy dictates that you have to use PTO if you can’t work - found that out the hard way. Christmas Eve is a working holiday. They have tons of teams and clubs but my department doesn’t allow the time or flexibility to even participate in anything that doesn’t involve us clicking around in their program.
The management has turned to a fear-based style; they are constantly emailing empty threats and setting unattainable goals.

I don’t know your scenario but I would encourage you to continue doing your research. Like every other corporate job, not every department is terrible. Don’t be afraid to ask tough questions during your interview-you’re interviewing too to see if you would be a good fit, not just them to you—and listen to your gut.

Best wishes to you!

I am in FWAE. I do get merit increases, though never above 2%, even though I continue to perform at the top of my team.

When I started, there was a lot of opportunity for advancement, but the Bobs came in last year and did away with that.

My previous employer was a nightmare. There were no raises and my salary was abysmal. Optum is a far better place to work than that place was, but take that for what it's worth. So much at Optum depends on your team and having a good manager to support you and shield you from the b—s— from the top.

My team has good work/life balance. There is no expectation that you will put in more than your 40 hours, though pressure is coming from the top to change that. Also, the workload expectation from the client is not realistic or attainable, so everyone is always working from behind. The other side of that is everyone on your team is in the same situation, so you aren't getting called out for it.

Some of the systems are so tedious and archaic that you will feel like you're in an administrative role until you're comfortable enough to perform more engaging work.

  1. B. Cooper, do not board this plane. I have worked for 2 other Fortune 10s and this place is horrific. I have seen and experienced s-x, age and racial discrimination. HR does nothing here about those complaints. This is a money making off the back of the sick run by a bunch of greedy white boys whose ONLY concern is the stockholder. Benefits here pale to what I had at my other 2 employers too. Bail Out now D.B.

If you have a current job you don’t hate, think long and hard about joining Optum. You won’t get promoted, you won’t get a merit increase, the bonus is not guaranteed, and depending on where you work, 50 hours or more per week is normal. Layoffs are a constant across the company. If you join, keep looking for something better.
