Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Who stays here just for severance pay?

I am baffled by the people who stay here just for severance pay. A colleague recently turned down a decent job at another company just because he was waiting for a package here. I mean, it’s somewhat understandable because I wouldn’t want to miss it either, but what makes you so sure you’ll end up getting severance pay?
Even if it is completely guaranteed, it is much easier to find a new job while you still have a job, and severance pay here is not worth the risk of waiting for a new job opportunity to come up.

Many people lost their severance when SHLD filled for bankruptcy. You think when Transformco folds it will be any different?

a good employee making 6 figures is going to make more in a thriving company moving on. Don't hold out for severance on a small salary. Get to work elsewhere

When I got my severance last year during the furlough I was quite surprised that they gave me over 10 weeks. Last batch before me they only got 10 weeks max. I was lucky.
If someone is making a six figures income and has over ten years of working there it could be a good sum of money. Got layoff during this time is additional $300 more a week from the unemployment. That's a good income for not working. In the end, it is an individual's decision. For me it was a good decision to stick around to get that severance since I knew they would have cut me loose any day. With the money I got from both sources I can finish my own project that I wanted to do for a long time.

During the pandemic not all full time Sears employees got severance. A friend of mine who worked at Sears didn't get one.

I agree 100%. I've seen the same thing happen. People delaying their future for a few dollars from an unstable and dying company. Unless there are unique circumstances it makes no sense at all.
