Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

UP INTENDS TO DOUBLE THE AMOUNT OF WOMEN IN ITS WORKFORCE IN THE NEXT 10 YEARS.

I can’t believe nobody has commented on this yet. How does a company plan to double one part of the workforce, with one of their main goals is to shrink the entire workforce?

If they double the amount of women in the field, then what’ll they have? Two? That sounds attainable.

If they double the amount of women they can let go of quadruple the amount of men easily....maybe more

They used to be able to recruit women but just couldn’t keep them. Now neither male nor female wants to work for this train wreck.

How long do you think the women will put up with what goes on there? If they double the amount of women, then how long do you think it'll be before the first harassment claim shows up? I'm not saying men are smarter than women, or women are smarter than men in any way. The UP NEEDS to start with getting people who want to work there, regardless of gender! Railroading has historically been male dominant. I know women can do the job just as easily as the men. Given the culture and morale problems there, I'm starting to think the women are smarter for not applying in the first place. Good luck to anyone that applies for a job at the UP.

Well they have always wanted to increase women in the field. Problem is once women get in the field and realize the way UP is going to work them 80 to 100+ hours a week, not respect their off days or off work hours, call them while they are on vacation, and just the way in general creepy superintendents act towards them, they quit. There is basically no way to be a mother and have a family and be a field manager. UP has no respect for work/life balance or anyone as a human for that matter. Everyone is just numbers on a spreadsheet. So some of the same reasons they can’t hire women in the field is the same reason men are quitting as well.

We have only two, one MSO and a Sr. Manager. So doubling is still only four, but they can still brag and get the PR machine going about how great they are. It will also look good on a color bar graph.
