Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

calling all car departments

Car Department, without blaming your Union or Management, what is your reason for ignoring blue signal protection rules, cutting corners with inspections and repairs? Is your motivation for that so you can sit in the break room longer? If so why? What does your craft even do that anyone could walk off the street and perform? Does your craft inspect cars? What value do you even bring to the Railroad? Why would the Railroad even waste the money on you? Now without blaming the Union or your Management help the general public to understand your role.

Think of all the children who will die at a crossing because no one is looking at these cars.

Has anyone thought about inspecting and repairing the cars in a quick and efficient manner and not let them pile up? Garbage in, nothing out is not good for anyone.

Carman are not trained proper and do not take time to read and learn there jobs.Trainers in mechanical are hand picked and for years trained carman on what managers tell them to do.They give them short briefing on rules then will tell you but in real world we do it like this we are a transportation company we run freight we don't do repairs unless it will cause derailment and persuade the. To let it go to next location.Olse saying in mechanical it was good when I seen it,or like ole cricket finger says we are here to run freight no one has ever gotten fired for running bad orders. The carman bought into program now jobs are being cut and soon contractors will be doing work..

Sounds like management talking...
if you don’t get more then 65% Efficiency you will get a a warning then the next will be failure to comply and can be fired at that point. Carmen must now work the rip and yard with sometimes 1 Carmen look at what there doing in Denver it laughable Destroying America one family at a time
If everyone keeps running to get the work done there will be less jobs, look at Wyoming 2 Carmen left.

It's an environment created by management called, "Nobody Cares Anymore". Wether you work hard, or don't, you get treated equally, like garbage. It started in 2014 and continues to this day. You know how many hard workers I've seen turn into guys that don't want to do anything anymore? Dozens. And it usually starts after they get written up for nonsense.

Hey OP! Do you even work for the RR? The car department was hit with the layoffs for a few reasons. Remember back when they said we're going from moving trains to moving cars. Why call out the car department? They wanted as few touches as possible, which also meant maintenance/repairs. Which also meant less people. The whole idea was to avoid stopping those cars for any possible repairs that they may need. Getting those cars to the customers was all they cared about. Don't blame the car department for your opinionated view of work that is or isn't being done. It doesn't matter anymore at the UP. Every department is required to meet a certain daily requirement for work load. Otherwise they'll face threats from management. Most times they'll be threatened anyways. The management has to have something to complain about on a daily basis. Management has forgotten what railroading actually is. People are fed up with that place. If various people in various departments are ignoring rules then I would just chalk it up to that they just don't care anymore. This is what the UP has become now. If you're a manager who just wants to post here to stir sh1t up, then remember that your actions helped the UP become the worst employer in North America. With good management, comes a good company. Remember that!

Where else in this country is there a job where you need a college degree to drive around and harass people trying to work? Could you imagine these clown managers on D-Day? Your helmet chin strap isn't snapped, I'm going to have to document that buddy...

If we could only bottle the work ethic of the management, and that cool guy Charles Bronson way they carry themselves...

For years the Managers "Role" was to drive around and hand out tickets "FTX's" for ridiculous nonsense while you were busy trying to do actual work. One time I just got done walking an 80 car train. When I got to the north end of the yard, 7 managers were just standing around flying drones like a bunch of 12 year old nerd kids. Cool work ethic bro.

If you do the job for years I can walk a train as fast as you can walk?

Accountability must be in short supply in the Car Department, not one answer that makes sense so far.

If the managers could do their jobs properly, then the UP wouldn't be the place it is now. It's time for management to start explaining what their job duties are, instead of calling other departments out.

They can't do their jobs properly. I was told 3 minutes a car in 2008, then a minute and a half in 2014 and before I quit, 30 seconds a car in 2020. That's not even enough time to snap hoses. No wonder nobody cares anymore. Can you weld? Can you use a torch? Can you perform a proper inspection with 30 seconds per car walking 118 cars by yourself in -20 degree weather? Stfu nerd.
