I interviewed at another company last week. I thought it went well. But at the end of the interview I was told that I was “overqualified” for the position that was listed. I found that to be strange and I just need to know if that’s really a thing. I always thought the more experience and knowledge you’ve gained - the more valuable you would seem to future companies. Am I wrong?

High salary for the company to pay and also over qualified for the duties can leave you dissatisfied meaning you could end up being a dissatisfied employee who leaves
Two words: age discrimination
An issue I’ve had with it is people can become bored in a role if they are too experienced for it. I’ve personally experienced this. I had a very highly visible role whet I interacted directly with corporate level on a daily basis. I loved it. I also provided leadership to some unit personnel. I left that role to be with my family. The role I took to relocate was a joke in every sense. It was responsibilities of an intern. I had always had more responsibility and more difficult work than that. Needless to say that job did not last long.
I have had similar experiences but I will echo @uer+19FeDhHw and @lmg+19FeDhHw with you are probably asking too much for compensation
It simply means they think you are too expensive...
Might be a nice way of saying we can’t pay you what you’d be expecting or we can’t retain you for long
