At what point does every person just become a contractor. Not working for a contractor but a contractor themselves. When do the workers stand up and say all we want is a safe work environment and to provide for our families.

Many class 1’s are doing this. I talked to a director at NS about them shortlining and contracting yard switching. He said NS can pay more for these services because they don’t then have to pay benefits and equipment costs. He also said a big consideration is they don’t have liability for personal injuries and this is a major consideration when contracting out services. He said NS is making as much revenue doing this as they did when operating the trains themselves. This may be the next wave for UP in their quest to eliminate employees.

Have you actually seen the prices they charge for their services? I'd like to know how that's even in the ballpark of a good idea.
