Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

$15 an hour minimum wage....Not At Macy's

Amazon minimum wage is $15 an hour, Costco's is $16, Target, Best Buy, and Kroger are all $15 as well. It certainly is cheaper for Jeff and Macy's to be driving social issues like racial injustice and diversity in our store than actually aligning with other major retailer to pay their people an almost livable wage. That's why you see several questions about racism on the colleague survey and none about how you feel about how you are paid.

Macy's only increases the minimum wage when forced to do so by state or county ordinance. Here in Chicago our minimum wage is $14 an hour due to city law, but stores 20 minutes away that aren't in Chicago are hiring at $12 an hour.

Macy's asks a lot, it expects basic retail level associates to ring registers, do physical labor like placing merchandise and cleaning up after customers, sell credit cards to customer who don't want them, sign people up as personal clients, and sell whatever the charity program of the month is.

Jobs are scarce and if you need one and can't get one anyplace else, then by all means apply at Macy's. Just be aware you will work harder and have less support than at other retailers and get paid less too. Also consider the reoccurring staffing changes and reductions as the company continues to consolidate and move to Online, always ask if the store your applying at is a "Neighborhood" store which means it will be closing by the end of next year.

Don't just look at Jeff's CEO pay per hour, consider that Store Manager's, Divisional Team Members, and Regional Team members all average around $100 an hour (average, some make less and some make more). The company already pays $15 or more an hour when the city the store is located in requires it, or if the store is a Union door.

Macy's can afford to join the ranks of retailers listed in the original post, it's just easier to focus hourly team members and store teams on issues like diversity and racism than helping to address issues like making a livable wage. Much cheaper to support round up campaigns for Bag Hunger and Black Girls (last month), than ensuring that diverse colleagues and their families can actually support themselves by working at Macy's.

Here in Texas, we call Jeff's promises and commitment to diverse colleagues an "All Hat, No Cattle" approach. Sounds good, means little. Wait and see what kind of raises hourly people get this year after not getting a raise last year. It won't be much different, expect another year of 15 to 25 cent an hour increases in most cases.

Anyone saying that companies can’t afford to pay more has truly been brainwashed. Macys could pay $25 an hour they are choosing not to. Even small businesses can afford it, they lie to you to keep us all quiet. If they can’t afford $15 how do they pay $2000 an hour to Jeff. Don’t be naive people these companies are using us and we don’t even make a living wage. Minimum wage should be $25 if it kept up with inflation.

Bottom line is Amazon has the sales to support a $15 minimum wage, Macy's does not. Keep in mind you're also talking about a company that would rather give out $9 million in bonuses to execs than keep hardworking employees. That's another huge difference between the two companies, Amazon values and recognizes the employees are the core of their success.

@1zuf, I’m 57 and a white female who grew up in the south. I completely agree with you. Their attention and “wokeness” is completely over the top misguided.

As a person of color who works for Macy's I can confirm that we would prefer to make $15 an hour instead of signing diversity pledges and creating black history month boards in our breakrooms. We are tired of listening to a bunch of mostly old white guys talking to us about opportunities in a company that is clearly in its twilight, how about paying us enough so that we don't have to work two jobs?

well this explains the job board freeze as well as 45 stores being close is actually 60 being closed... its damage control . macys cant afford 15 a hour .... they will just give cuts coming very soon

Macy's has already reduced staffing to the bare bones minimums, so raising minimum's to $15 an hour would not result in any additional reductions. Instead the company could look at reducing executive bonuses and perks and raising prices a few cents per item to cover the expense.

Do you know how much senior level bonuses and perks run this company or how much we spend on unnecessary travel? The corporations mentioned by the original poster are retailers as well and are also being impacted by the cultural shift from brick and mortar to online. The only thing holding Macy's back from joining the ranks of company's that pay a livable wage is how they prioritize the well being of their colleagues.

It's always cheaper to espouse social reform initiatives than actually do the work and figure out how to take a leadership role in your industry by investing in your people.

We’re $10/Hour at the NH Border when 5 minutes away they go up to $13 in Massachusetts. Many companies don’t want to pay $15. Eventually these bigger companies will be forced to but it takes time.

Also the companies that ARE $15/HR are reducing staff to mostly part time or letting them go entirely. Best Buy just laid off 6K workers!!

The companies will always find a way to profit over their employees. Be lucky if it doesn’t come at your expense!!

the next step if this passes which looks like it will is only part time jobs for associates and more cuts from management . best buy just laid off 6k for this very reason and only said PT will be the new norm

In TX the min wage is $7.25 a wretched hour. (((rolleyes))) I was hired in at a whopping $8 an hour. Yep.

I’m in Miami and we hire in at $9 but I always offer $9.45 as it’s the most I can do without having to get approval for more. $12 is more appealing than $9.

Those are all growing profitable companies that aren't based in dying malls. Most of them are essentials that never got shut down too, that expanded their operations and jobs during COVID. Why didn't you get a job at one of those instead of grousing about your wages? Not qualified for the pay?
