Drowning

Cummins is drowning; another example of fingers in the dyke. The inevitable avalanche is on the horizon. Years of both downsizing and restructuring band aids for reduced market demands from stagnation: not innovation. If Cummins was market expanding, they would not be continually closing plants globally and consolidating. Cummins is struggling to maintain – not obtain.

I hear all of that! I was out on a smoke break one day; it was me and 2 others there. They were both tore up from the floor up. The manager looked at the other one and said “double dose of hater here.” Ignored me the entire time I was standing there. It wasn’t the first time. That same manger a few weeks prior, told me not to wait at Cummins for advancement. It’s not my fault that someone else is an ugly dork, don’t be mad at me and block my advancement cause I’m more man than you.

I’m just going to say it like it is: don’t be mad at me, be mad at the facts. For 10 years, I witnessed revenge of the nerds at Cummins. I saw pictures of their spouses and kids. All tore up from the floor up! I witnessed ugly dorks promote their same. If you were more attractive, then you got left behind. Regardless of your talent.

I left Cummins several years ago to join their main competitor. Since then, I’ve brought 30 top talented people over from Cummins. I too had earned my MBA on the Cummins dime. I fled for similar reasons listed below. I’m actively recruiting Cummins employees to join our company: no routine downsizing, restructuring or off-shoring. Our innovative product demands are globally expanding in market growth, with 3 new plant launches in the last 18 months. Thanks Cummins!

South Carolina plant is where everything goes to die anyway. There is a lot of turnover. Top performers are let go because they won’t move to the Columbus c-ap hole, and many employees are overqualified for the jobs they are stuck in and have negative attitudes. Some are just too lazy and/or complacent to look for anything. They get stuck doing the extra work for no additional compensation for downsizing in other areas of the company. They do not care about their tenured employees at all and will cut regardless of performance. Do not try to climb the ladder unless you are willing to move, because eventually you will be let go. Better to stay lower level at mediocre performance to be safe. What does that sound like???

Last summer, Cummins wiped out the DBU in Indianapolis. Hundreds of jobs lost from downsizing, restructuring and off-shore cost cutting. Cummins has been hemorrhaging profits and personnel for several years now, and crippled in expanding operations of profitable growth and market expansion.

I foresee very bad things to come from cummins. They are consolidating big time and to be honest with you the Covid virus may have helped speed up the process even more. I didn't know the Good office at the Mall essentially just fired all of you. Did you even get a severance package?

This facility in Memphis, TN has been in operation since 1966. 300 employees now being shown the door: they must be getting ready to retire. Cummins is showing them the door before they can get their retirement packages. The plant in South Carolina, where these jobs are going will have those job duties spread around different teams, added responsibilities, with no pay increases. The Cummins way!

Their struggle is multifaceted: the lack of market innovation for several years, ability to keep top talent, and widespread corporate politics to sustain those who maintain. Myself, and several others I’ve had the pleasure of working with at Cummins, all earned our MBA’s on the Cummins dime from the IU Kelley School of Business. In time, we all left. We had no plans of doing that at all, but when we all saw the resistance to drive change, innovation and market expansion we all bailed out for more lucrative opportunities: not just financial but our overall impacts. Executive Leadership is the anchor in nosedive at Cummins. Continual cost cutting in methods of global plant downsizing, restructuring/consolidation and off-shoring are all signs of a company on the decline not on the incline.

A few weeks ago, Cummins closed our office in Columbus, IN. The Goody's Office at Fair Oaks Mall.
Several hundred of us were all shown the door. Downsizing, restructuring, and off-shoring. No performance related issues, no notice, Cummins just announced it out of nowhere: your services are no longer needed. I had worked there for over 10 years. Never any market expansion, it was just all sustaining the existing product landscape. Sales have been diving for several years. This was not the first cost reduction strategy that I’ve seen. It has been unfolding for several years. Cummins is struggling.
