First and foremost I want to say that I am in the process of looking for another job and I’m not evening waiting for the next “layoff”. The problem I have is with my manager. I can take criticism with the best of them. I’m an adult but to demoralize me in front of others time and again has taken its toll on me in many ways. I plan to get out, but I need to find something to fall back on. If I go to HR does anyone think I will be retaliated against? I have mixed feelings either way.

make those hr ladies work. tons and tons and tons of us forms, and paperwork, and more forms. then more meetings and calls etc.etc..they love it. Make them earn their ill earned monies, and yes unemployment is an absolute gift i this putrid "country"/(business).
Go to HR. Why not? Make them work and waste everyone’s time including your own because once you know they are being awful to you why not make sure you get out quick and end employment misery? Unemployment is better. Once they treat you like c-ap for an extended period of time you lose it and hate life. Better to be straight with them that someone is bullying you even if you know reporting it will mean you get bullied. Make HR work and I believe a quick exit is good if you find something but it’s always more satisfaction in the end for them to be forced to pay you unemployment. Just quit caring about the job totally and it will be enough to get them to get you out. People cling in fear to jobs they hate. For what? Get out because mental stress isn’t worth it. Unemployment is a gift!
may want to look into constructive discharge whereby the us corporation makes the employees life so miserable that they have to quit. Sounds like standard operating procedure.
"No laws to protect you. The only way to change a company like that is to have a mass strike. But no one is going to risk their jobs during Covid. They got you. They own you. You can suffer or leave"
Bingo. There are very few if any us laws that protect employees. It was a corporatocracy.
That was the us empire. They have: employment at will doctrine– it does NOT exist in any other country. You have no labor protections. The company, boss, etc.. can fire without ANY reason (unless i it's race, s-x/gender, disability, origin etc..). You like rap music, the boss likes classical, you're fired. They can shut down projects without notice and you're gonzo. They OWN us. They control us. And this is ok by the vast populace.
As an american employee, we're at the total whim of the us employer who controls our ability eat, shelter ourselves, provide for our families, pay our bills, debts, etc.). It's well orchestrated this way to create modern day wage slaves within the unregulated american capitalistic winner take all system.
HR does not care about you
Your Boss does not care about you
They care about their salary and their bonus.
It is either them or you. It is not personal. It is business.
As a boss you can be rude, mean, arrogant, cruel. But you cannot s-xual harass a person or call them bigot names. That becomes an HR nightmare. You still be gone but you get a settlement not to use. Or better yet if they push you (hard to do during covid).
And why do they hire people like that. To whip folks they feel are not motivated enough. Do not feel bad, it comes from the top. And they beat each other up and it goes down a level and they beat each other up...all the way to you. A good boss will stop the chain and take the blow.
No laws to protect you. The only way to change a company like that is to have a mass strike. But no one is going to risk their jobs during Covid. They got you. They own you. You can suffer or leave. Or hope your boss does something stupid in violation of company policy. But being mean is company policy.
Get a another job and leave right before some major project is due. Then the task will fall to your boss.
Yup. tell em off. Once you have the offer. Plain as day tell em off. Let them know-whether American boomer, millenial, gen x whatever, you don't take sht from anyone, any corporation, etc. Have integrity, honor, and let em you are not a walking door mat. You're a human being who deserves respect and dignity. Bleep these American corporations
You are sol. Grin and bear it. Get the offer. Then tell that guy what you think of him. Every insult.. fat bald dumb bad teeth etc. and if he wants to throw down. Do it in front of everyone. He'll cower but take it out on his family or your old coworkers later on but his life will be worse because he won't ever forget it.
In the hollowness of Identity Politics, endless, hu$tling, and HR girls etc.. they are just more of the same. Two arms on the same monster, two faces on the same coin. You dig? They'll do a lil rebrand, some pep talk, and it will be the status quo.
you;ll think that some 'change' happened due to your compliant, nothing happened except, surprise surprise they sided with the their payors (the Corporation). Just like "judges" –who pays them? That's their boss. The govt. Who pay HR girls? the corporation. Sickening dump. Emblematic of the failed state.
Here’s how a complaint is handled when reported to HR. The intake is documented and immediately forwarded to the person(s) to whom the complaint is made about in addition all the way up to the SVP of that division. Retaliation begins immediately. Most likely additional work load to set you up for failure and could be verbal abuse and harassment. The scare tactic. If you contact the HR contractor assigned to the case and inquiry if you are being retaliated against the policy is to respond No, the case hasn’t even open yet so of course you are not being retaliated against. Then a month or two later the HR contractor will contact you by phone to tell you the investigation showed no wrong doing that a few people were interviewed and all agreed nothing inappropriate occurred and the case is closed. It is the SVP and the chain of command down that performs the investigation and not the HR contractor. It will never be in your favor so move along and be quiet.
We're simply easily replaceable cogs in the wheel. The healthcare sector is even worse because the scum employer often uses emotional guilt (sick patients, patient expectations, patients relying on us to live better lives, etc) and uses the excuse of client needs to further restrict your flexibility and the public turn on you when you use the power you have in your union (strike) to get better conditions and rights for both patients and employees.
Do not go to HR. Just wasted several months of my life with them with horrific complaints and they did nothing so I left. Optum managers are the most consciously biased bunch of corporately protected basxxxxds you will ever come across.
OMG. Myself and some of my team members would receive threatening after hour text messages on our personal phones from our boss. All directed to people that were not of his race. Still not protected. HR was well he doesn’t like you. On a positive note he was eventually termed. The negative is he received a large payoff because he had to testify in a former employee lawsuit. And yes she lost. Very hard to prove race discrimination it court. You know he just wasn’t a good person or manager but it wasn’t race discrimination. That’s all that’s needed in court. You basically need to have a hateful comment directed towards your race or age to have a solid discrimination case.
HR is staffed by contractors and ‘managed’ by Directors and VPs. The lackey brings the issue to them and then they file appropriately in their file drawer or contact the leaders in your division for your eventual push out. I LOL when I read the correspondence put out by HR on diversity, etx
Meet the new boss, same as the new boss. HR is, was, and forever will be against the employee. Who pays the hr ladies? Hmm
Witnessed something like this in OH. The two managers behaved in such a disgusting manner its hard to believe they are professionals...then again, maybe not. Its a shame but its a good thing you're planning to get out soon.
You go to HR if you want to be laid off unless the person did something s-xual or racist . Then you be protected but will not grow in the company unless others have reported the same thing and nobody in the company likes that person.
Never go after a person that is well liked in the company. You will be eliminated. People hated in the company..even by HR, you might get by,
But overall, going to HR is like going to your boss. HR does not think. HR brings people in. HR gets people out.
I had the same problem and took my complaints to HR about a month ago. I got a response but apparently I filed an Ethics complaint instead of an HR complaint.. I find the HUB to incredibly misleading and not at all helpful. We’ll see what happens.
They told me it’s against company policy to record phone calls between employees-even if you tell them and that it’s against company culture to ask for correspondence to be in only email.
I too am job searching and have been for months and pray I get something soon. This place is affecting my mental and physical health and personal relationships. People love to throw around the word Toxic but this company truly is just that.
HR is not your friend and they definitely don’t keep anything private.
Verbal abuse although repugnant is ok/permissible/fine in the us work place because employees have very few if any work/employment rights except for the 5 or 6 sacrosanct (race, religion, etc...). Abuse away employers. Do NOT go to the HR dept, they are there to solely protect the corporation and rat you out. just plan your escape
Definitely!
They especially hate it when you record the verbal abuse... I just ran across it on my computer recently & can’t believe what’s permissible for Optum. I wonder what the licensing board for the abuser would think?
I know of a lot of people who go to HR and they ended up getting the short end of the stick (forced to quit, fired, etc.) in any company. HR may act like they are there for you but they are not. I think they cannot even help you if they want to because their job depends on helping the manager vs the "insignificant nobody" like you. Yes - you will be seen as dispensable.
HR is not your friend. They are a wing of the corporate elites.
Find yourself something better. Reporting something to HR will not benefit you at all. Everyone I know that left the company and had a not so great experience has moved on and are quite happy now. The company is not a normal and certainly not a standard. Make yourself happy and keep looking for another job. The jobs are out there just takes some time.
Do not go to HR with a complaint. The retaliation will begin immediately. The outcome will not be in your favor. Worked for RX and the boss took up an adulterous relationship with one of his employees and both became hostile and threatening to the staff. Thoughts were it was to put someone on CAP the end of each year in order to give a 20k bonus to his call girl. Massive turnover in the department and a boss MIA most of the day because he with the cc. 4 complaints to HR and 2 directly to the SVP and all of those 6 were either put on a CAP or termed. This all occurred with a former employee age and race discrimination going on and an outside legal firm involved that was hired to defend the company. The company is ruthless. Feel they would have you disposed of if they ever thought you have become a real threat. Go find yourself another job. There is so much better out there. Make yourself happy and never lose your integrity.
Do NOT go to HR. Repeat do NOT go to HR. They are NOT your friend, your advocate, etc... They are the enemy. They only represent the interests of the corporation. They are there to protect the corporation. Anything you say to them, WILL be repeated to the corporation. You have very few if any employment rights in the US empire. Verbal abuse although terrible is permitted in the us work place. That's fine. Because there's that employment at will nonsense. Unless they violate your religion, disability, s-xual nature, race, origin, then they SOL. Otherwise, anything goes in the US corporation. If you think this is an opinion, please go to several american employment attorneys and see what they say. Good luck, keep your head down, and plan your escape.
