Wish I'd known about this place a little over a year ago when I decided to leave my old job for a (supposedly) better position at Exxon. Since then it's been nothing but one disappointment after another, all combined with constant fear of layoffs. The worst decision of my life.

Couldn’t agree more...
You all should be taught a bitter lesson for joining a rotten org.
Tenure and knowledge is no longer considered valuable at xom. Of course there's no guaranteed lifetime employment. But when you have 20 or more years with the company, good work ethic, regardless of being high flyer or not, we were still valuable. Now, the only thing xom considers with respect to tenure is that the employee is becoming too expensive (i.e. a liability). And they need to be cut before they become retirement eligible, when they will become an even bigger liability. Absolutely, no regard for the human aspect.
@hch+18sju8Dn, you sound like you are relate to one manager at ExxonMobil. Am I right?
Exact same sentiments. Experienced hire here. Felt is the worst decision in my life too. Disappointed not because of the lay offs (cos it is happening everywhere right now), disappointed cos of the way how they handled it, the toxic work culture etc.
No company truely can stand behind hire for life
I am on the same boat!! They told me about hire for life...and a lot of other stuff and it’s not true
For surviving xom is not a bad company, however for thriving it can be very challenging. So the views are different for different aspirations.
I'm happy that I left my previous employer. Staying there (an oilfield service company) would have been worse. They had layoffs in October 2019 as well as May 2020. Sure, things aren't as good as they were when I jumped to ExxonMobil, but things are tough throughout the oil and gas industry (and worse a number of other places).
I feel the same way here.
