Thread regarding BP PLC layoffs

BP grades and salaries

I was wondering if you could help with relative salary progression in BP in Engineering (officee based) either UK/US.

I'm a G. 10yrs experience before BP, 11yrs at BP. Current salary is 230k USD before bonus. I'm in Upstream P&O but used to be Subsurface.

Yeah those sort of inflated numbers are why there’s an effort to shrink the US Tech footprint

As with other employers I've had, the pay range for G/F/I or any other is likely also determined by your job. A subsurface person at G won't make the same as technology, who won't make the same as other administrative.

You all are comparing apples to oranges and don't even realize it.

FWIW, G at ~$240 base pay (not including stock, bonuses, 7 + 7% retirement match, etc).

Technology in US HQ

US:
H - 130 to 180
G - 180 to 230
F - 230 to 280

These are not accurate for US. At least the base of the ranges

A former "G" in Upstream engineering , I hired in as a G in 2013 at $167,000 w/ 20% target bonus, and let the company voluntarily before layoffs hit in 2020 (without the package) for another operator as a "G" w/ base of $197,500 and 20% target bonus.

What’s the starting salary for an undergrad hire in a finance or business role?

75k + 10% bonus sound about right?

US G Upstream - 25 years experience - 225K, not including bonus.

US salaries are much higher, but pension and job security are worse. Its danger pay.

@giuq, I completely agree with you saying that people need to be living under their means and/or kept their job!
However, when comparing salaries it's important to compare like to like, function to function. It's no use comparing an HR salary to a Geologist...it's not gonna jive. The same goes if you have a "safety critical" role. Some roles just pay more.

The fact of the matter is that the people stating that their G salary is above $200k is most likely adding in their annual bonus and using their W2 earnings rather than their base salary. Even if they aren't and these high $200k numbers are their base salaries, I sure hope they are living under their means or kept their job because the market does not support these ranges right now. Glassdoor and Salary.com are excellent sources to research the salary ranges for the positions you're looking at and nothing is even coming close to $250k for G level experience. I am a G, a female and my base salary is $165k and I average a 20% yearly. My W2 earnings average about $190k to $200k. As a side note, some people may not realize that the Energize points you get count as income on your W2 as well.

I'm a G with 20 years of experience (10 at bp, 10 external). My salary is currently $218k.
When I joined 10 years ago as an H, I started at $150k. If you ask your LM, they can tell you at what percentage you are according to the grade. Keep in mind there is a roughly 1/3 overlap between grades.

This is all for Subsurface, by the way.

I’m a US F. I started 9 years ago at $180k and do not currently earn $230k. The grade pay scales do overlap. Someone in my team started at the same time in a different location at $220k and I know that someone else in my team started 12 years ago at $250k. All F

Seems like US is basically double the UK then. This plus Houston cost of living is a lot cheaper than London = not fair

I'm a level G with a $145k salary. Whoever says the range is $180 to $230 is full of p–p.

“If those numbers are real, I need a raise!”

They’re not, but you probably still need a raise! :)

Back in the day, the salary ranges were posted in myHR. At some point, about 10 years ago, the company got really secretive about them. In my experience, HR will always tell you the range of your current grade if you ask, and will give you the range of the next grade up if you tell them you’re applying for a new role.

The numbers posted below can’t be correct since there is overlap between the salary grades.

I left BP two years ago as a level G with 15 years of service. My salary was $135k, and I was in a technical role in downstream.

No the US bp salary figures quoted below are correct. It would vary by your role and discipline a bit but overall the numbers look right.
