V.I. Kmarts Continue to Deny They’re Closing Despite Empty Shelves

The holiday season may seem a bit grim for Kmart shoppers in the Virgin Islands this year. The retail store is visibly empty, with some restock items nowhere in sight, and management remains tight-lipped about the stores’ future.

Back in July, the four Kmart stores in the U.S. Virgin Islands – at Sunny Isle Shopping Center and Sunshine Mall on St. Croix and Tutu Mall and Lockhart Gardens Shopping Centers on St. Thomas sported a lot of empty shelves. But the store’s management continues to support maintain they are open for business and compare their status to other big box stores such as Home Depot. “Home Depot runs out of items,” said one store official on St. Croix. “We just had a Black Friday sale a week earlier than everyone else. We need to restock.”

The Source contacted a representative in the St. Thomas location but was directed to the public relations office, which was not available for comment.

About 10 years ago to Kmart was one of the largest retailers in America and a major shopping stop in the territory. Shoppers would fill the Kmart parking lots on a Black Friday and line up as early as possible to get the best deals. Now that’s a memory of Christmas past. It almost impossible to find bedding, what was the electronics section is blocked off by shelving, and the children’s toy section is nearly empty. Kmart in the states has gone from more than 2,100 stores to 34, and in the U.S. Virgin Islands it was once mainstay for resources but now shoppers have to turn online to find items.

“I tried to buy wrapping paper and trinkets for my tree, but apparently the selections are close to nonexistent,” Judy Robles said while shopping in Kmart St. Croix. “I am not comfortable ordering my decorations, I like to physically see what I am buying.”

What you can find at a Kmart store are items strategically spread out on to shelves and tons of sale pricing. Sales on clothing, detergents and groceries seem to be a staple for the retail store. Stroll through the card section in Kmart St. Croix and you will find children’s masks inserted into the pockets where cards were once placed.

At the Kmart near Havensight, the outdoor signage is stripped and scaffolding stands where the store’s name was once displayed.

One shopper on St. Thomas said, “My mother, who likes to purchase things via Kmart and then have me pick them up in store, said that the St. Thomas location is no longer in the drop-down menu when ordering. Since last month St. Thomas is no longer available for her to choose.”

In 2017, Sears Holdings, the parent company that owns Kmart and Sears, announced its “substantial doubt” that Kmart would survive, but didn’t show much concern for the four Kmart stores in the U.S. Virgin Islands because they were not facing imminent closure.

In 2019, they denied a rumor of imminent closure that was circulating. At that time, Kmart hinted that corporate executives were working on a new plan to enhance the prospects for the future success of Kmart. That has yet to be seen. Within a year, the store has seemingly continued to dwindle, and rumors continue to circulate about the fate of the retail chain in the territory.

Meanwhile, Kmart continues to post job openings, confirming that they plan to stick around for some time. They have also launched a “Kmart Pharmacy with ScriptDrop pr-scrip-ion delivers a solution,” campaign. The initiative allows customers to order and receive pr-scrip-ions from the Kmart pharmacy.

LMFAO, Kmart was not a TOP company in 2010. A middle of the road company? OK, maybe. The post was about Kmart specifically, not the Sears brand. LOL, Kmart, since the 2002 bankruptcy, was a shell of itself, not a top company by any stretch. Again, this is referring to Kmart specifically, not the other brands of Sears Holdings. Kmart, basically post-9/11, was an also-ran retailer, never even approaching the levels of Target/Walmart. etc.. There Days of hanging with the big boys ended when The Century turned. They were as much of a "top" retailer in 2010, like Sam Quarrey is at tennis, compared to the big boys, Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal. At top 20-30, journeyman like player. A solid player, but nobody calls him a "top" player. That was Kmart in 2010.
And now in 2020? Forget it. Kmart with their remaining 20-30 stores (LOL) are pretty much a bottom retailer, like the 400 th ranked minor league player who doesn't even qualify to enter Wimbledon.

""About 10 years ago to Kmart was one of the largest retailers in America"? No it wasn't. Also what does about 10 Years ago to Kmart, even mean? LMAO, another copied, dumb, article."

Actually, yes, yes, it was by sales, because Sears Holdings last profitable year was 2010, and had combined sales of $44 billion- they weren't just crawling along as they are in 2020 when they'll be lucky to do $1 billion in sales. They actually were a top company in 2010, it was between 2010 and 2020 that their sales fell off a cliff. Even business news reports picked up on that:

Please, next time you comment do educate yourself, because your ignorance spreads to others who believe what you say, instead of what the truth is.

Moreover, while I would never steal someone else's article as my own, because I'm not a thief, just the thought of someone calling me out for stealing someone's hard work would cause me to shudder because I have morals to not plagiarize someone's work. If someone drops a wallet on the road, technically, I could Say "finders keepers, losers weepers", and keep it. But I would not do that. Just because I CAN do something doesn't make it the right thing to do. I never steal anybody's work, journalistic or otherwise. I might use it, but ONLY with the source cited, similar to footnotes, that authors use in books.

If someone is going to copy an article they should cite the source not pass it off as their own journalism. It's not a matter of calling someone out. The moderators would ban someone for plagiarizing. And nobody gives a sh!t about you and your rumors either. Post the news, cite sources, and facts. And don't copy/paste someone else's article without stating that you are doing that. It's not hard to just add 1 line like this: "Folks, I'm copying this article from XYZ source". But to pass it off as one's own work is beyond unethical. Horrible journalism. We're here for verifiable news.

Not all copy-paste operations are plagiarizing. For instance, anyone can write up something in their favorite text editor, then copy-paste it into the submission box for this website.

Well, if the poster just pastes an article in here, they need to cite the source they got it from. Many people here have done this. It's perfectly fine to copy an article, but cite the source, and don't just type it in here like as if it's one's own, original work. It clearly isn't. OP got caught.

For the record, since the id–t OP didn't cite his source, I will. He just copied and pasted the article (without giving Credit), from here. Not good, OP. If you are copying an article, cite the source, and don't pass it off as your own. Everybody here can see through that:

If you're going to copy and paste from another article, at least site the source. Don't copy and paste stuff as your own, without citing the source, trying to pass it off as you wrote it. We can all see that this was a copy/paste job.
