I can't comment about current atmosphere at GF but I left ~1.5 years ago because I felt no one there was interested in moving beyond either status quo or simple small and incremental improvement. I think the decision against a 10% shrink to 14nm was evidence of that. There wasn't even an appetite to pursue this minor process stretch for fear of something going wrong. This is just one simple example but this industry was built on recognizing that change, sometimes significant change is a job requirement to survive. I actually believe that being foreign owned to people who didn't understand the business of semiconductors had a profoundly negative influence on the conservative company business nature. The thought of going out of business creates a mindset and commitment to excellence that is hard to quantify but you know it when you see it. I agree with the folks that said that merit itself doesn't count for much there and that simply following rote asks from management provides career stability. For those of us who love semiconductors and lived their lives in this credo, watching it fail is a sad pill to take. Still I am thankful for my years of service to the industry and the benefits it afforded me...

Unethical business practices are followed by this company. Tom's bonus is tied with layoffs and making the IPO happen. Worksmart .. my a–.
The severance package is just an 'ok' package.
Many managers/directors/VPs working here are total id–ts, heartless people.
Got the fat & juicy package today @ Singapore via smart exiting
Severance package is 2 months for every year work plus 3 months
Work here for 36 years, DMTS level
General reference, average salary for DMTS in Singapore is around SGD18000 per month
So severance package is around (236 + 3)SGD18000 = SGD1,350,000. Average minimum smart sustainable investment asset class in Singapore gives around 10% return, which works out to be around SGD11250 passive income per month. Happy 5-Star retirement life!
This is another good opportunity to cash out by exiting, execute smart to be selected
GF is never a place based on merit to progress, it is a "Survivor Series". Right clique and politically right is the formula for progression and do well at GF. GF is not a place to be idealistic and never will be. Good or bad have different interpretation at GF. Accepting and aligning to this, you will do well at GF, as measured by what you have gained $$$ as well as position level at GF.
Santa Clara collegues weren't offered no severance, perhaps this is what "worksmart" stands for.
Is it a SC soecial?
