I'm relatively new here (a little over a year) and the one thing that's been constant is the fear of layoffs. Now I know a good part of that is the pandemic and the fact that everybody is laying off people. So my question is, what is it like outside of a worldwide crisis? Is there job security or is this the norm?

I do not think any company nowadays provides job security.
You may want to look into gov jobs or public universities, something like that. Maybe utilities...
