Thoughts on what might happen next year? Any news on upcoming layoffs or any other news?

Cengage has had layoffs for the past 13 years. I can't see why 2021 would be any different. Especially since the last investor call showed the company lost about 150 million dollars.
Right now a lot of companies are down. The problem is before the COVID we were already in trouble. The merger with MGH was going to cause a lot of layoffs but the resulting combination of lists, and more importantly the MGH brand name, may have allowed Cengage to rebrand.
I don't know what happened but back when Heinle was turned into National Geographic Learning we were told that within 2 years Cengage would cease to exist and that all of the lists would carry the NGL brand. That deal obviously fell apart, despite the management over there giving the same tired Steve Jobs speech every chance he got. The marketing and sales couldn't get it together and there was never a change. Think about it, you have the NG brand and can't make it work, that was a license to print money.
There will be layoffs. Much of the technology production (assembly) is going oversees. Those contracts are in the final stages of being signed.
Content is just preparing to have to deal with the foreign vendors directly while taking on more duties with no more pay. It's the Cengage Way!
Greetings,
Words like “lay-off” or “reorg” are antiquated terms from a bygone industry. If you are a disruptor who thrives on change then you should thrive on the opportunity to embrace that change and become your own CEO.
We didn’t have any layoffs in 2020. Why do you think we will in 2021?
@3fyp+18fDEfYq. I spit my diet coke on my screen. PLEASE PLEASE keep writing.
Greetings,
I want to share with you an exciting new program we are rolling out in the coming month. As you are aware, we have historically had a difficult time recruiting young college graduates to work at Cengage. This is an urgent problem because as much as we value our older, experience employees, we all know that they can fall into damaging routines that go against the Credo and hold us back from disrupting as much as we could be. As much as we love our experienced editorial and sales colleagues, we can all agree that the time for them to "get on the train" (as my grandfather used to say) is near.
Despite being a leading tech company that is disrupting the education industry, highly recruited young college graduates often choose to work at companies such as Facebook or Goldman Sachs over Cengage. This has puzzled us for many years with some former employees going so far as to claim it is an issue with pay and the business sector we are in. I vehemently disagree with these former employees and believe the issue can be solved by recruiting younger students into roles at Cengage.
With that in mind, I am proud to announce our new Hansen Jugend initiative which is aimed at educating potential recruits as young as 8 or 9 about the opportunities at Cengage. We expect many of these Hansen Jugend to come from the families of our employees. Once we recruit these Jugend they will go through a program that will guide them towards a career in disrupting education. We will provide them with age appropriate tasks that will be paired with their studies.
A benefit to our Hansen Jugend living in the home with their families is they will be fully soaked in our Credo and can alert proper departments within Cengage of any concerning thoughts their parents may inadvertently share. Our HR department can then intervene and get these wayward employees back on the train.
Successful Hansen Jugend will graduate from college directly into tech, offshore content management and sales roles. In order to maximize their entry level salaries they will live in preapproved Hansen Jugend dormitories within biking distance to our Boston office.
Those who were not born or raised in coastal cities are not eligible for the Hansen Jugend program. The Mid-West offices of Mason, Ohio or Farmington Hills, Michigan will not be participating in the Hansen Jugend program.
I look forward to sharing more with you about the Hansen Jugend program in the coming month. We even have some videos featuring some of the kinder we have targeted for the program.
This company’s leadership is so fake.
Don't worry everyone. I have spoken to someone in a senior leadership role who has assured me that, having radically redefined the Educational Technology industry, Cengage Unlimited has been an unmitigated success!
Why not 2020?
A January reorganization could start the year off with a bang.
