Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Good Luck Everyone! Be Strong!

Good luck everyone. Life is going to be very different for a lot of people by the end of the week.
Have some compassion for your fellow man, be humble and don't be boastful about keeping your job, if you're lucky enough to do so. Personally I think I've got a 50/50 shot of staying on. My supervisor has given indications that I am safe, but of course I don't trust any of that.

Get your resumes/CVs updated today and tonight. It can be handy to have the company information available to you while writing your resume. It can help with wording what you do.

Download/print a list of all your contacts from your PC and phone. You never know who you might need to get a hold of that still works at the company.

Keep your resume to one page, two max. The only thing hiring companies care about is dates, your job titles, employer names, education. Two to three pithy bullet points max for each job.

Contact people from your past and present who are now in leadership positions and who will vouch for you. Ask them if you can use them as a reference. Reference letters are a bit anachronistic for most jobs, in my opinion. Just create a list of professional references and submit it with every resume you send out. Name, Title, phone, email. Try to get five or six references.

Brace for a lot of time filling out employment web forms. It's not fun, but it's how its done these days for most jobs.

Don't turn to alcohol, exercise daily, get good sleep. Don't loaf and sleep all day. Keep busy, it's too easy to get down and depressed. Sometimes in life you have to FIGHT. This may be one of those times.

Hang in there, keep your chin up, this too shall pass! I'll be praying for all of us!

Reading all those posts, I feel like we are all about to go into battle. I just know, I have worked with some amazing, smart people through the years. If you have been with the Company for 30 yrs or just 1 yr, you are part of the same family. Dysfunctional at times but still family. I've sat next to people on long overseas flights...a few minutes after chatting, you realize you work for the same Company. There is some recognition or understanding that only someone who works for or has worked for ExxonMobil knows. You cannot take that away. I'll be honest. I have ExxonMobil scars like getting passed over for a promotion, little to no raise, working for a tyrant, helping a lazy or dumb colleague get rewarded/acknowledged, working on weekends and into the wee mornings, etc...most of us have these scars. But there have been some fantastic times. I have learned so much. Experiences and friends that I will cherish forever. Colleagues that I'm closer with than with my own blood. And, if any of those colleagues are cut and fall on hard times, I have their back. The people about to be cut have made ExxonMobil great and I hope whoever is told their time has come that they realize that. Good luck and see you on the other side!

I am out of scope for these rounds. I am aware that we are not supposed to give out reference letters and I won't, but I will answer a personal phone/ email request for recommendation.

FYI, it’s company policy to prohibit current employees from providing references or letters of recommendation for separated employees. Though given how dishonest the company’s been I’m sure many of our colleagues would be willing to break that rule.

At this point I’m wondering who would be the lucky one, the one laid off or the one that has/gets to keep working for EM!!
