Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

It’s 4 pm and we all just got an email

Everyone was just sent an email stating the US Voluntary Program is now over. Those who volunteered and were approved will retire as of January 31st. They made no mention of how many chose this option and will ultimately be leaving. They did say all employees (whether directly affected or not) will understand the outcome of this process by Dec. 15th.

They are now commencing the Involuntary Program so it’ll be a hard week or two. I inadvertently heard that a third of my group were leaving through retirement. I wonder if we will ha e much of a team when this is over.

All the managers and supervisors in my group have scheduled at least some of their “status” meetings for the next few days. Mine is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. Wish me luck. I need 4 more years before I’m retirement eligible.

Hire a good employment lawyer. In past days if you were that close to retirement, they didn’t touch you for fear of being sued for ageism. Especially with the very opaque process for selecting people to be let go, this is worth fighting. You have more power than you realize (or that Exxon will publicly admit to).

This non-stop bashing of any and all levels of supervisors and managers is uncalled for. They too have families and will suffer just as much as any staff employee if they are laid off.

I can understand this mindset for the most senior levels of management because they play a role in setting the course of the company and promoting the existing culture. But it is foolish to believe that an entry level supervisor controls much of anything, period.

Rejoicing over the pain and suffering of others that get laid off, with the possible exception of senior management who are already filthy rich, shows a hypocrisy and shallowness among those who are on the one hand crying about their situation, while at the same time wishing the worst for people around them, including supervisors, "old guys", and countless others who have just as much to lose.

If the only ones who are left are these types of people, EM only gets worse, not better.

And no, I am not in management.

I have been through this a couple of time at another company. Everyone gets the same speech, "times are hard, cuts have to be made, ect." before being informed whether they are being kept on or let go at the end. We normally knew how many positions were being eliminated and could guess most of the results, but it was brutal for everyone.

this is how they handled it in 1986. every ten minutes you met with dept manager. safe or vulnerable. lots of folks that were told they were vulnerable were saved because more than expected folks took the voluntary. sit tight folks.

It sounds like the “safe” people are about to pick up one more job, or maybe two for same amount of money and less benefits.

Yes, they are scheduling meetings with people who are safe. I know first hand...I'm one of them
and so is one of my colleagues who has only been with the company 9 months. We both have
been "invited" to one of those meetings.

Rather than scheduling meetings, our department head decided it would be easier to just cold call us. So everyone in the department gets to spend the next 3 days waiting for that phone call with no indication of when it will be coming.

I may do a not so secret happy dance when I find out a supervisor or manager has been let go. If it’s an executive, I might honk in the ring road.

True that all personnel will have 1:(1) shortly, no matter their status.
This of course a bit more torture for all - and EMpathetically also for the supervisors.
At this interval, they can't do the reveal to anyone. Have been told not to do so.

So what are your Holiday plans?
Seen a good movie lately?
Yeah - Larry retired. He'll be hard to replace.

Yes, in my group they are scheduling appointments with each person on staff. In these meetings, those that volunteered are told that their application has been approved. Those that are safe (for now) are informed about what their job will now entail. Those that are being cut are told that they are being let go. By doing this, they are able to temporarily hide who is being cut.

It’s brutal. The admin was told to order boxes to have on hand for those packing up their things.

Heard from a credible resource today that the number of employees that participated in the Voluntary Program was close to the number they were expecting to participate. So you can expect that the number involved in the involuntary program is close to the numbers previously communicated after the US Country Study.

Email from our VP (UIS) suggested everyone would get a 1on1, regardless of whether they’re being let go.
