Thread regarding Cengage layoffs

Funny that Cengage seemingly went back to ENGAGEMENT as their ‘new’ direction. The name ‘Cengage’ was coined in 2007 as a shortcut for ‘Center for Engagement.’ It was a branding challenge from that day on, because no one ever made the connection. They just thought it was an odd, hard-to-remember name for a company.

It ended for me quite some time ago, I'm now at Pearson. My wayward path began at the end of college it was such a wonderful time, I was saying goodbye to my sorority sisters when the cengage recruiter emailed me and said that 'yes', they wanted me to work for them and I was so happy. Fast forward 6 months after I had moved to a large city in Texas and that's when it got bad. I know I'm an attractive woman I've always been told and have had many boyfriends before I met my fiancé and even had a few female admirers but it's not my thing, it's just that I'm irresistible. There was a young DM and she had a thing for the ladies, but no one else knew it was her secret she's still in the closet. I'm not naïve, I know how the world works, but this woman constantly harassed me at an NES a consequence of free booze and an empty hotel room and even engaged in a email campaign and texting to get my attention but it didn't work. She even started inventing excuses to come to my city even though she wasn't my DM to just happen to show up on campus and pretending it was a coincidence. They don't have as much free reign now but this was back in the KS days, everyone being their own CEO. Suffice to say, she ruined my reputation among my peers and I was forced to leave after a battle with HR.

I remember our leaders coming back from Kiawah insisting to us minions that it absolutely was not a boondoggle and instead was an opportunity for everyone to get their minds right about creating great digital products that students would be line up for with money in hand. They promised that all this right thinking would trickle down to the minions soon enough. We reorged for the 507th time, but this time it was all about the student. Kiawah revealed to our enlightened masters that we actually sell products to THE STUDENT. The STUDENT would now drive all product direction. The STUDENT is the one we serve, not the professor. THE STUDENT THE STUDENT THE STUDENT! It was a new day.

Then leadership found out that The Student has absolutely no interest whatsoever in overstuffed digital content that they don't need. The Student actually hates our company and would rather borrow what they need from us and move on with their lives. If there was anything The Student wanted from us it was cheaper print options. Well, this was not well received and Michael quickly oversaw our 508th reorg with those who dared to share this blasphemy being shown the door. The rest of us quietly got on the train. The new direction was now....ENGAGEMENT....

When just after filing bankruptcy, and letting scores of our colleagues go, our leadership decided to have a posh meeting for a couple hundred managers at Kiawah Island. We jumped the shark a long, long time ago.
