Thread regarding Northwestern Mutual layoffs

Would you recommend the company?

I have a friend who asked if we were hiring because he was recently laid off. He has a family and while he is not the sole provider - he was the main source of income. While he has the experience and knowledge to be employed here, I just don’t know if I am comfortable recommending NM to him. Would anyone recommend the company as a place of employment?

No. Not ever. Friends don't let friends work at NM.

If you're a woman or POC, yes, they are catering to you big time, but if you're a male, specifically a white male, keep looking, they don't want you.

Wouldn't recommend. They no longer offer 401k match because they overhired a bunch in the past couple of years and aren't doing well financially. Mostly useless hires, at that. 401k match is "tablestakes," right? If I hear that word there one more time...

I echo what the others said. Take a job there but keep looking and don’t be picky for something else either.

No way. Keep looking for another job. NM is going downhill fast. Poor leadership , lack of direction.

NM is not a long-term place to work. Take a job if you can get in as a last resort but always keep looking to get out.

Personally I wouldn't simply because for the past 3 years this company has lost its' mind. I also know a few people who took other jobs to get out of the current NM environment. As a last resort maybe, but tell your friend to keep looking even if they get in at NM.
