Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

I wish I was born into my parents' generation

People who are able to retire right now did not have to deal with half of the stuff we have to deal with. In the last couple of decades we went through several financial crises, a drastic increase of H1B visas, massive outsourcing, and to top it all off, now a pandemic. Add to that having to pay off huge student loans that were pocket change in their time, and is it any wonder I'm not sure I'll be able to ever retire?

Those generations did not have it easy. They just had better morals and integrity. Their word meant something.

Typical post replies....insult op instead of trying to frame your counter argument and thoughts in a constructive way. Could have been an insightful discussion of how the world changes and challenges of life shift and everyone has their struggles and people will be biased to their life’s struggles. I think data shows the college cost for younger folks is a bit out of control in general (sure XOM folks shouldn’t struggle much to pay back but a lot of people will struggle very hard). Also remember millennials were raised by someone so if millennials “fail”, their parents are a large source of that “failure”. Someone decided to give them those participation trophies; that was the adults. Doesn’t mean millenials aren’t blameless for their flaws but life is complicated so stop being a–holes to people and let’s learn from each other.

Your parents salary was one tenth to one quarter the salaries today in comparison to your age and years of service. You cannot compare your parents to having it so much better than you. Everyone has to deal with the present. Deal with your attitude and move forward!

If you were hired by ExxonMobil out of university, there are few excuses as to why you cannot pay off your student loans timely.

I am in my early 30s and I do not sympathize with you. We are, without question, in the greatest era of human existence. The economy operates in cycles so your parents experienced several market crashes too as well as outsourcing (which began in the 70s with manufacturing). We live in an era of widely available/free information and immediate gratification. What more could you want?

A pandemic is also not new. Google 1918 Pandemic for instance.

"History doesn't repeat itself, but it often rhymes." ~ Samuel Clemens

Be smart with your money (live below your means) and student loans will not be of concern to you. Keep your chin up.

Oh boo-hoo! The quality of life and standard of living is higher than its ever been (at least across the western world). Sorry you didn’t get a participation trophy this year, although it feels like EM is heading that way.

There were financial crises in your parent's generation as well as major infectious diseases, world wars, the DRAFT, corruption at every level of government, civil rights riots and cities being burned down, not to mention energy crises, Vietnam and Korea, assassinations of beloved political and civil rights icons, cold war, AIDS and SARS, the list goes on and on.

Imagine instead of complaining about student loans, you were drafted to go into a war you didn't even care anything about, almost certainly never to come home.

You sound like a whiny crybaby that wants everything for free. Get over it. Your parents struggled and worked hard for what they have. You'll need to do the same. Different time/era, same struggles.
