Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Terminator

Why do we use the euphemisms they push on us? “Right-sizing”, the “way we work”, and now the appointed “Communicators”.
They are terminating people, not communicating. It’s not a two way conversation, it’s a lay-off.
We are not in this together.
Call their b—s—.

When they did this to me at another major a youngster barely out of school HR rep and the manager called me into a conference room. The youngster started to tell me that I HAD to sit and listen to his blah blah blah. I quickly brought it to his attention that I didn't have to sit there and listen to a young know nothing for a split second, to hand me the paperwork and I can read it on my own. He proceeded to argue as I stood up, put out my hand, took the papers and walked out on him. Ta-ta punk!!

@efi - you’re a fool, if you believe they are going to get the size of the organization “right”.
You’re an even bigger fool, if you think laying off people will solve the problems of a bad strategy, bad leadership, and terrible culture.
They are not “right sizing”, they are pulling the last straws as the organization fails.

Terminating employees has nothing to do with “communication”, there is not going to be an explanation, there aren’t going to be questions answered, there isn’t going to be any listening. It’s a termination notice.

Most likely it won’t be the last, as fundamentally management hasn’t addressed their shortcomings nor have they plugged the holes or stopped the bleeding on bad projects, bad decisions, and bad people in charge.

What's wrong with the term right-sizing? It's an apt description reflecting reality.
What's wrong with communicator? They are the ones who will communicate the terminations? Seems OK to me.

"We are all in this together," I agree with you on this one. It is a big lie, and those who use the term immediately lose my respect. That's right, VP, when you say, "we are all in this together." I no longer have any time for you. My earpiece comes out and I don't listen to a damn thing you have to say because at that point I think you're an id–t and out of touch with reality. Bit harsh probably, but my tolerance is low on that one. The term is a pathetic, meaningless platitutde that is used ONLY to make the one saying it feel better. That somehow he/she is going thorugh this with you too, so your're not the only one suffering. It's really quite insulting, and it makes me cringe every time I hear it! Really manager? Are you that stupid? Are you going to be there when the mortgage can't be paid?

Can you tell I like that phrase?

Terminator training is ongoing.
Giving how supervisors s— at people management, it’s highly likely they will be extra awful at pretending they care.

This company has always had its own internal doublespeak for everything. Why would this be any different?

Sources say the first line in the talking points for supervisors is “this is going to hurt you much more than it is going to hurt me”

Agree. I don't need someone call me and tell me that I am laid off. Just send me an email with package information is enough. Talking to them is wasting of my time.

A simple pink slip on my desk would suffice. It’s not like they will tell you any details as to why. Do I want to hear some canned HR/Law rehearsed communication? Not.
