Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

First Year w the company. Fight or flight?

Joined the company around the end of 2019.

Gave up good prospects in other industries to join EM, only to be hit by incoming work increase, increment freezes and 401k dropped. Went ahead to apply elsewhere and offered an equivalent in a decent commodity firm. Heard from older folks we typically reward those who stay on and repays packages years later.

Would like sincere advice.

If you have the skills and interest to be part of an industry with better future prospects, then I would consider making a career change. After 5-10 years it is harder to change industries because you are either a generic manager or too specialized.

Rule from the past find your new job first. These are uncertain times with a lot of companies waiting out the pandemic.

ExxonMobil was my 4th and final company. There is BS and politics everywhere. All rating and performance systems are bad in every company unless you are a key performer.

Your time at @XOM will give you some perspective in the rest of your working life.

Good Luck! Make a good decision using logic and be patient.

I have seen too many good engineers get PIPd in their 50’s to recommend you stay. 30 years with the company passing each years PIP and suddenly you’re the worst in the group? That’s what happens when you keep firing each year, by the end there is no one left. Make a spreadsheet and see for yourself. Hardly any of the people I hired on with are still around and I am only at 15 years. All PIPd

Flight. The old timers remember a company that is no more. Just like people who have already retired. The benefits and opportunities they had are gone. Their experience will not be your experience. Get out as quick as you can.

Commodities, huh?
Well - you are in that business now.
Why leave?
My understanding is 'commodities' business is more cut-throat than this.
Observe, Porkbelly. Enron.

Go.

According to the MLRP documents on the LAN, it's XOM's standard to PIP all 0-5 year employees in the needs improvement category (previously bottom 20%) in addition to the NSI category during downturns. If this business environment keeps up for 5 years, only 1/3 of this year's new hires will still be around. And that's without considering layoffs.

XOM likes to hide 'separations' and not advertise this practice until you are PIPed and pretend that they will be your long term employer and dangle financial carrots in the distant future. Don't count on it, the odds aren't in your favor.

in 1960 Exxon was the place to be. By 1980s it started to go downhill. When Carter and Reagan put the kibosh on R&D tax benefits, engineering when to sh*t across the board in corporate America.
It is what it is. If you are under 40, jump and keep jumping. Don't look at a job a security, it isn't. Look at it as what it is a place to make money. And with each jump, learn something new and demand an increase salary to jump 20%....compound interest formula for salary. Over time when you are old you might settle down into a position you like, if the people don't s— above or below you. Do not get into the offshore engineering env. where you have meetings and no one understands English.

go, they do not reward anyone for staying. Sometimes you can work yourself up the ladder, but if they keep you....you are in for a minimal of another 2 years of no/small raises and more layoffs. The pressure does not stop here.

Fight. We need people who ‘question’ to stay around and help us reinvent ourselves.

Just always keep your back-up plan ready in case.

After a decade with the company, I would never recommend this sinking ship to anyone.
I’m done with the toxic culture, the entitlement of the boomers, the lack of innovation, and the failures of leadership.
I’m actively jumping ship, and most of the people I know are too.
Only fools and true believers will go down with it.

Please leave if you’re already having thoughts like this. What really gets my goat is that people like you, along with the incoming new hires that they are honoring offers for, aren’t eligible for layoffs. Meanwhile some very good employees got PIPs and more will be laid off while people like you don’t even know enough yet to keep the lights on. You understand that an increase in work is normal as you become more independent, right? Jeezum crow clearly the company has never heard the old bird in the hand adage if they would rather get rid of employees that have proven themselves in favor of thinking new hires will somehow be better. Meanwhile you’re sitting over here complaining about being busy.

I’m a long-term employee. Leave, and don’t look back.

At your age leave. The only people who should stay are RE and NRE. Anyone else can find a better deal.

@thd+180tWADC

Nothing has changed with ranking. It’s always been BS and always encouraged backstabbing. Only change now is management no longer needs god approval to drop you more than one tier.

People really need to stop pretending XOM was nirvana before 2020.

If this was 10 years ago I would have said stay, but with the way rankings are done I would advise you to leave!!! 31 years with this company and it pains me to see what it has become!!!

You should be fortunate to have another option. I would leave before the wave of unemployed professional hits the job market!

Flight. The person who gave you advice to stay for long term either is mentally challenged or just wants to see you miserable. Do not hesitate and run for your life. This is company of robots and in the past it made money to you could become a robot and be ok but now even the money and lead has vanished.

Run run run as fast you can
