Is it even possible to get approved for it? I'm not talking about the usual job-related stress, but the kind that causes me insomnia and has put me on beta-blockers. Not all of it is work-related, but having no job security and anticipating possibly being jobless during a pandemic for months is certainly not helping.

So have I. They were then let go shortly after for poor performance. These are not normal times.
Stop the BS. Hundreds of our colleagues have such issues and because of the stupidity exhibited here they are afraid to ask for help until it is too late.
The company has actually a vet good program and I know people that took the “break”.
Yeah. That's going to go over well with your supervisor. Just let him know that you will be gone 3 months for a medical reason and that you will be back eventually. PIP train for sure for low performance.
There is no reason anyone in EM - even HR or Medical Dept - should be informed of the reason for a Doctor's medical leave recommendation. No reason.
They can ask if it is work-related, for regulatory tracking reasons - but the answer can and should be 'No' in this case.
General Practitioner should provide the recommendation - after consultation with the specialist (be it a Psychiatrist or Oncologist or Podiatrist).
Shame on the BooggerBoiz below, but that's EM and Texas for ya.
Signing up for EHAP help will also keep management and HR at a distance
One doctor doing the form will get it done.
The XOM policy will require multiple doctors opinions including the possibility of an XOM designated doctor. Your future employer may find out about your mental condition making it harder for you to get a job. Fraud is a crime.
You need to learn to micro-dose...look it up.
I did this years ago as well. Go to your doctor looking shaken. Say you've been in bed for days and feel helpless. You're full of anxiety and could barely read a news article without your head hurting. They will ask if your depressed or probing questions. Say yes I think so and have so much anxiety and feel helpless with family, work life. You have nonsupport system. Lost and lonely. You'll get diagnosed with manic depression and go on disability with XOM. Milk it for months of full time pay - search the intranet for how many weeks you have. Enjoy life. If they fire you when youget back, quite the lawsuit ahead of them. Get in writing at some point from your supervisor that you're doing great.
If you want to do this, just go see a psychiatrist and ask him to write you a note. I did this years ago, I had depression due to someone close to me dying. The doctor wrote a note to have me off work for a month due to grief. You don't even have to tell your supervisor, just have the doctor inform MOH, they will advise your supervisor of the leave and they are not required to disclose the reason
The only leave I am aware was taken by a dude to part take of promoting a scam, one of those pyramid schemes getting people to buy/sell pink drinks.
He came back to be one of those blow hard, know nothing, Koolaid managers.
If you take any leave right now you open the door for pip or layoff. I’d take the leave and use it to look for work. Get your leave then come back get PIP’d and take the pay.
If you can’t handle it then quit and find something else. There are people who would like to keep their jobs who can actually hack it in high pressure situations.
Stress leave? What stupid reason do you need to leave work for that?
Put on your adult pants and stop being a lower performer. If you leave for stress you will be let go next year.
I know someone that took a stress leave last year. They came back in April-May and were PIP’d shortly after. I’m sure it depends on how you were ranked prior to asking for the stress leave though. If ranked in the middle, I wouldn’t do it. If outstanding or outstanding with distinction, maybe.
