Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Managers telling who is safe

I have heard of two instances of folks that their managers have told them, they are definitely NOT a candidate for layoffs. In other words, they already put together the list of who is a YES and a NO, just waiting to wrap up the numbers of the voluntary to see how deep they go on the list. These folks have been told they are safe.

If you thought you had a tight relationship with your manager and they haven’t given you the wink-wink, you are safe....be worried.

The involuntary lists are done (as of earlier this week). The number of retirements accepted will be finalized on the 30th, determining how far up the list the line gets drawn. If you're above the bottom 10%-25% (whatever the total from your group will be), your management will know that you're safe. Managers know for some, only VPs for others for now.

There has been no communication of this nature.
It would put put one at risk of termination.
Company Ink. A no-no.

My supervisor is on vacation from now until the end of the year. Is that a good sign?

Just because someone says that some managers brothers uncle told them they’re safe, doesn’t mean it’s true. It also depends on the manager. Some managers will be keeping their cards closer to their vests while some managers have more latitude to tell the employees. (Like someone else mentioned)

Be positive people. Keep your chin up!

Pure speculation but this is going to be BL dependent. Chemicals is letting go 20 people! GP is 425 or about 25% so it’s easier to give signals in some organization vs others.

I have heard of some being told there is not a job for them in the new organizations, so signals are being sent.

I don't think this is a safe assumption to make.

Don’t read into that too much. I’ve heard some really weird sayings being thrown out by managers in 1:1’s...no idea what they mean. Next time I get one, I’ve been thinking of my response:
“Blink twice if you are being held hostage, and I need to notify the authorities.”
“What Lassie? Tommy’s in trouble?”
“It is what it is. Unless it isn’t what it isn’t is”
