What about the employees who determined they were nonessential? Will they be let go or does Exxon think we need nonessential employees when we are going bankrupt? Didn’t those employees admit they are nonessential? How would exxon defend a lawsuit where nonessential employees were kept while essential employees were let go?

Those saying office workers are non-essential, does that include the Payroll office?
We should have been working towards process improvements / re-engineering. We should be asking ourselves if certain tasks are really necessary. I think our processes would be much better and we would have a better number of employees based on what’s important.

Anyone who works in an office is a nonessential employee. That does not mean they are disposable though. The company is not getting rid of all nonessential employees.
Obviously you have zero clue what essential and non-essential actually means. Just like a typical manager, talking out your a– like you know what your talking about.
If I were you, I would be worried your "manager" job won't be cut during the 1st round of layoffs.
Manager chiming in. Yammer posts were explicitly studied and very useful on determining who was essential or non-essential. Employees who were proud to claim they were non-essential in order to avoid coming in to the office will be among the first to be let go... without a package. Emotional decisions were made, however I ask that you all step back and reflect. Would you not do the same.

I disagree that essential employees are need to protect assets during a crisis. Essential employees are those needed for continuous operation, think operators and maintenance. Nonessential employees can be let go in order to survive, then others hired later if needed or contracted out. In my house I have a garbage disposal, if I am out of work and it quits working, I can live without it, it is nice to have, but nonessential. My roof however is essential. If it leaks, I must patch or replace. My friend, it sounds like YOU don’t know the definition of nonessential and I suspect that you are nonessential and should by applying for other jobs before it is too late. The decision about you has been made, you just haven’t been informed yet. You have until December.
