Yes, people do assume when someone says they work at Wal-Mart that that person is a greeter. It’s a big box retailer.

Those saying they are ashamed to work for XOM.. what exactly are you ashamed of? Could it perhaps be your capability (or lack thereof) to find a better job/company? Did you forget that your employment relationship with XOM is voluntary?

People making the gas station jokes are being a bit rediculous and ignorant.

When people say they work at Walmart do you instantly assume retail? When a pharmacist says they work at CVS/Walgreens people don’t instantly assume they are just a store clerk.

Most of the largest fortune companies all have in person retail presence.

This is a tough one! I used to feel quite proud to say I worked for ExxonMobil...15 years ago. Back then it still had some kind of a reputation as a place that had good technical people and generally solid work practices. I'm not sure ExxonMobil has a any reputation or recognition with the general public. People outside the industry thought I worked for a phone company. Those in the industry felt sorry for me! Over time the high quality work that gets done internally has been eroded. Technical work and innovation has given way to cumbersome and very bespoke internal work practices, that are not transferrable to the outside (real) world. Luckily for me I actually continued to concentrate on technical work and on developing my real skills, much to the annoyance of my managers and at the expense of my ranking. I was not interested in the increasingly wasteful and useless new initiatives from management, that added absolutely zero value to the company. In the early days I was doing 80% valuable technical work but towards the end it was down to 20%. The problem with the EM environment now it that it creates a workforce who are experts in the ExxonMobil "system" but not necessarily good engineers/scientists or other technical disciplines. That makes it tougher to find another job unless you've found a way to keep those skills. EM still has some "cache" in the market, but I don't think that will last much longer.. the truth is out!

Outside of Texas, when I said I worked for ExxonMobil, they asked at which station I worked. I finally gave up telling people I worked for corporate and just said the one down the street. I pumped gas for a living.

I’m actually ashamed to have worked for and defended this horrible company for over 15 years. I wish I could leave the company name off my resume all together. I joined the ExxonMobil cult out of college. How they screwed me and a lot of other people by tagging/blindsiding us as NSI is sickening and shows this company has no values. They do not care about their employees. Wake up, people. If you aren’t in management, chances are you’re next.

Hey original poster from Houston. Your "power" is valid inside the state line of Texas, its gone when you leave. I work in New Jersey and when I tell people I work at Exxon they assume I am a Government mandated gas station fuel pumper. Enjoy the month of "power" that you have left. When you are laid off, please consider moving to New Jersey, we always need more fuel pumpers at the local Exxon gas station.

I live in a place where saying i work for exxonmobil would mean responses along:
'Oh, yeah. Did you sc-ape a seal?'
'How can you keep such good research in a hole out in the woods for so long?'
'What sedative do you use at night? For peaceful sleep?'

I won't be worrying about that any more.

When people ask me where I work, I say Jimmy Johns. Because that is where I'll be applying in about 2 weeks.

That is the lie that current employees are fed. People in industry do not respect XOM for all the reasons listed on this board. People outside of industry don't respect XOM because of the public affairs nightmares.

Leaving XOM is one of the most positive things that has ever happened to me. XOM does a better job of indoctrinating cult members than it does growing leaders.

It's embarrassing to work here. I have a public facing position and have to deal with outside clients to run them through a large number disjointed processes and annoying obstacles just to accomplish the simplest of things. I wish I was less conscientious and able to not give s–t like the rest of coworkers.

When people ask what I do, I always tell them I work for “an oil and gas company”. If they don’t care about the industry, they won’t ask which one. If they do and they ask which company, then I will say “ExxonMobil”.
Same response I get every time is a sarcastic “oh yeah, I’ve heard of that one.”

If you talk to someone in the O&G industry and say that you work for EM, they usually sigh or say something like "sorry" or "you poor bloke"

EM pretty much a pariah to a lot of other industry players as a partner because of arrogance, overbearing and unproductive work practices, slow response times, difficulty dealing with, unwillingness to negotiate or compromise, trying to treat their employees as if they worked for EM, etc. I never wore it as a badge of honor.

Others used to feel similar about BP because of their poor safety record, but they have improved their act and now are preferred over EM by many

You obviously live in a bubble. There are many othet great industries and corps out there. Honestly, I almost never say i work at xom bc of negative connotation that comes with it. Don't get me wrong, I am grateful for all the opportunities.

ExxonMobil carried weight once upon a time only because everyone knew you made good money working for ExxonMobil. But even many years ago people knew it was a bad company to work for with terrible culture.

I’ve been interviewing after I left and I’m close to landing a great job (negotiating the offer now) and I can tell you none gives a fuu about Exxon.
There is no reverence, no power, no mystique associated with it; it’s all in our brainwashed heads.
I’ve been talking to other jobs for engineers and in all the interactions none has spoken favorably of exxon or believes we are extraordinary; if anything, I’m looking forward to wash the oil and gas stench and move over the poor reputation of this company.

Every time I have told someone that I work at ExxonMobil, they respond "oh, so you weren't smart enough to get a real job out of college" or something along those lines.

So to answer OPs question: no

It's a name on a paycheck at the end of the day. I left XOM and went to work for a small private consulting business and make 1.5X what I was making at XOM. The work is more fulfilling, the culture is overwhelmingly better, and I'm just happier with life. I had some reservations about leaving a corporate giant like Exxon and like you there was a part of me that liked answering ExxonMobil when asked where I worked. However, I personally think it's important not to define your life by your employment. XOM leadership still thinks an individual owes their dying loyalty to the corp in order to succeed professionally and that is just a losing strategy in today's world and it's not healthy for the individual.

Regardless of all the negativity, the op takes pride in their job and that's to be commended. We're a loyal bunch and sometimes that's to our own downfall. The learning here is that "monetary" or "size" power is an illusion. Company's with positive culture, reinforced by their Management, are where employees have the greatest pride. Look at Southwest Airlines as an example, certainly not XOM, especially with the current leadership.

If by "power" you mean people knowing that you are a glorified paper pusher who gets put into a small box you will never see beyond in your career, than yes! Smaller, more nimble companies are where the real thinkers and entrepreneurial types (by OG standards) go, because they can see 1st hand every step of a project from idea to completion and add value anywhere in the process they think they can. Literally everyone knows XOM is for safety seeking corporate yes-man types, like myself! A layoff in the oil field, oh no, not at THE Exxonmobil that's why I work here! lol

Guess it depends on who you are talking with. In the Houston area it's fine, but no real pride per se. Outside of Houston, I hide the fact as long as possible that I work for the universally-hated Exxon.

Like Exxon one of the most hated companies in the world, the most unethical and under the most lawsuits for deceiving the public? ... just checking if we are talking about the same company. In today’s world where companies want to be more responsible in many areas I think most of us could benefit getting it off our resumes. ( yes and I probably don’t belong at Exxon with this attitude where I never had pride for working here but I’m working on the part of getting out :)
