I was put on a PIP (their reasoning for it is mind boggling but I guess that's beside the point right now) and I've been told by several people already that I'm as good as gone. Considering the state of the economy right now, I'd really like to believe it hasn't been already decided no matter what I do. Any survivors out there who can give me some hope?

Everything bad you heard about the PIP process is true and anything good you hear is from a Manager or HR backstabber who are trying to con you into a false belief to not fight it. Get out and polish your resume to a shine fast.
You’re toast, buddy. Find another job.
PIP at Amazon means you are history, just like in any corporate top firms
If you’re in the corporate office, it’s well known that Amazon is cut throat and will PIP on a whim.
