Thread regarding Teradata Corp. layoffs

Why would you even bother to stay?

Congrats to all of my fellow colleagues who got cut today. I did as well (US based) and I am so happy. TD is never coming back. It isn't about the tech, it is about what customers are buying. If they thought TD was a better solution than other things in the market, Snowflake wouldnt be worth 13x what TD is.

Stop worrying and go ask for a package. The market is hot.

For anyone being cut, the market for Talented IT folks is still hot in spite of fake news etc. Stay away from big job boards posting for roles, they are flooded with 100’s of unqualified candidates and yours will fall into the black hole. Instead use your network and connect with peeps you worked with in the pass and bypass the application process! Also look at the competitors I.e. snowflake and others. Use LinkedIn to introduce yourself to hiring managers and create a dialogue, finally engage with good recruiters who staff your skills. Do this and you will have 2+ offers in a matter of weeks!

Instead of firing people who have knowledge and can contribute being fired. Why do we need VP/directors/manager who are only doing admin role as they don’t contribute anything. Only skill they have is to criticise others work.

CEO said operating like 20 billion company. Why don’t you get rid of these people and save millions with zero impact to business.

Start with IC and BC VP’s and managers. Only few BC and IC’s bring some value to table.

When people are being fired everywhere in consulting, why do you need VP and practice partners.

You can keep so many valuable resources in the salaries which are paid for these useless people.

Have the 10 minute meetiings with the manager and HR been scheduled for tomorrow (before the all hands)? They cut off email and Teradata access immediately thereafter.

Why stay? Sometimes it's difficult to walk away from years of contribution, especially in very complex technical systems (yeah, I'm in engineering). Also, every company has its share of problems. Not everyone here at Teradata are exposed directly to all the garbage we read about here. There are still plenty of isolated engineers that love their work, keep their head down and just solve problems–because that's what they enjoy doing. I imagine the same is true for any organization. Any particular function can work well in isolation, but at the end of the day we are all part of the Teradata corporate system. Here's to greener pastures.

PS, I'll update if I get laid off. :)

I’m an engineer. I stay because I like the people I work with, I don’t mind the daily work I do, and job hunting, interviewing, and starting in a new place all basically s—.

Why would they bother to stay? Because they're comfortable. There are many comfortable SVPs/VPs/Directors who have paid their dues s—ing up, going through the motions, and building their fiefdoms so other people can do the actual work. Finding another gig like that is difficult, regardless of the economy.
