Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Don't Get Pushed Around

EM managers are bullies. And like all bullies, when you stand up to them, their tail goes between their legs and they leave you alone. Do your job without fear, and you'll do it well.

We all have a choice. We all will land on our feet. Lost money due to unemployment can always be recuperated. But dignity, that is hard to rebuild. Look at yourself in the mirror and be comfortable with who you are.

Folks, HR is not your friend. Their allegiance is always with management, which provides their knowledgeable other feedback each year. Happy client = favorable “performance” feedback. It’s strictly a “what’s in it for me” culture.

From what I am reading all over here (which matches my experience) it seems that the overlap between going to HR about a supervisor and tanking in rating , in many cases ending in PIP/PIL, is very high. Management by retaliation does not make for a healthy company.

An excellent, highly rated GeoTech and his team including Geologists were mistreated by their Manager, He and others reported the mistreatment to HR. Of course, his manager gave him a bad performance review even though his work was very good. He got Fired.

Tit for Tat management does not work. Neither does HR work to rein in abusive management,

Reading the statements here, it is horrible to see that EM management is the lousiest, most incompetent and arrogant. This is a new cancer on human society.

I hope Wall Street Journal writes a whole article dedicated to toxic and incompetent management of EM. #WSJ #NYT

Another testimonial here. Disagreed with immediate supervisor about course of project. Discussed with her boss. Turned out I was right -saved the project. My reward? Next cycle, she got a promotion, I dropped like a rock. Lesson: Management can fail, it is a learning experience. Your only job is to obey, fall off a cliff if you must. Better be wrong than disobey.

Agree with one point - 'they leave you alone.'

Sorry, but for any that want to stay employed at EM, the bullies here do not go away when you stand up to them. Instead, your ranking drops like crazy and YOU go away. You might think you won a victory by speaking your mind, but your demise at this company is imminent. I agree with standing up for your beliefs, but do it where it is accepted. It's not an option at XOM. It is strictly a confirm and obey company. Sad but true. Having strong beliefs, passion and backbone is great, but you are not going to last long at EM. Behavior here is more "yes sir, may I have another please".

Experienced the bully from supervisors and I chose to speak up, get retaliation and PIL, uphold my rights as a professional and seek LTs to justify the mislabelling, as anticipated, LTs have not guts and failed to provide otherwise. Sought line manager to support in my career search and act as my referee, as expected, manager never respond.
These are bunch of scumbags managers who are selfish and clearly lack leadership behaviour.
Relieved I am out of this toxic workplace, the worst in my career record.

I stood up to mine and got dropped multiple quintiles into NSIP and got a PIP for my courage. This is not a company that allows any sort of insurrection. Hunker down and kiss every a– above you you can find until the economy improves then bolt for a more honorable company.

This is the right spirit, regardless of what happens with this company.

Be ethical and have courage. If you stay in this organization, then you can be the change we need.

Otherwise, if people with integrity can't succeed in this company, then it's doomed in the long run anyway and you're probably better off elsewhere.
