Thread regarding United Airlines (United Continental Holdings Inc. - UAL Corp.) layoffs

Good News and Congratulations to Some..

A lost job/income doesn't have to lead to immediate financial stress. Some here will be in better shape than others, so...

Congratulations to:

  • Those who DIDN'T Mortgage themselves to the eyeballs, but bought a modest, yet perfectly livable home.
  • Those who DIDN'T get themselves roped into a 6-8 yr car payment because they just HAD TO HAVE a brand new(and expensive)car. Rumor has it that reliable, decent transportation can be had for a small fraction of the cost of a brand new car.
  • Those who DIDN'T sign on the dotted line for an expensive rental, telling themselves and others how they "had to" for work. We've also heard rumor that reasonably priced rentals can be found outside of the city.

State EI is nothing to brag about, but with little to no car payment, low living costs, and forgoing unnecessary expenses, one can live on it.

So congratulations to those who run a tight ship and know that sh!t happens in life, and those best prepared for it will be SO glad they did at times like this.

Last note: I would think you understand that this economic downturn is neither short nor is it mild, as many of you assumed probably up until this week. As the saying goes, "Hope for the best, plan for the worst" will serve you well in these days, but sadly, most don't live by that motto, theirs goes something like....

"Assume the best, plan for even better!!"

@5tg.

Do you still have your mullet or now a skullet? Your name must be Joe Dirt

Don’t brag about your so called money. You may have a broke flight attendant knocking on your door looking for you to pay her bills or for plastic surgery.

Only $1 million in cash and 401k during the greatest bull market in the history of the world? Doesn’t sound like you leaned much. I’m at almost $2 million and have only worked 20 years.

Some people are lucky, others wise, most fools. Which are you?

I have been here before. I had my dream job with Continental Airlines back in 1983. They went bankrupt and I was laid off. No car payment but a mortgage on a home. Rented the home for less than my monthly payment and moved in with a friend.

A very humbling experience. Swore I would never be in this position again.

Took an Electronics course and got a job in 1985 repairing computers.

Long story short, laid off again in 2016 after 31 years at my second dream job. This time I had 1M in savings and 401K. The last time I had new car was back in 1985. Wife got a new one every 14 years paid in cash. I have paid cash toys in the garage, 65 Corvette, two first gen Camaros.

This is not the end of the world but an opportunity.

I am sure I will get slammed for this post. But tomorrow is another day. A door has closed and another one has opened. It will be okay.

I wish some of you had the same standards for corporations. If an individual gets laid off and complains about debt, “oh well why did you not setup a rainy day account?”

But if a corporation never saved money during good times and spent all of it on stock buybacks and executive bonuses then you all go crying for a bailout aka corporate socialism.

debt is a stone about one's neck, dragging you down. Better to live below your means and put a bit aside for investing or play or survival, then to blow it all as soon as its gotten.

the grasshoppers and the ant was a good story to learn young...

if your still employed, reduce your debt as fast as possible, even should it mean skipping a vacation or two..
