Thread regarding BD (Becton Dickinson & Co.) layoffs

This is k--ling my productivity

With layoffs now a constant at BD, I notice that my productivity has gone down drastically. My motivation to give it my all is gone. Why would I bother when chances are that if I'm not laid off in the next round, there's always another one and then another one that can have my name on it. So why bother?

Hey, just go on LinkedIn and you see plenty of diversity at BD from associate director and above. Let’s get behind that one. BTW,BD leaders do not trend conservative and the conservative white male line is not an argument for layoff choice, BD is very much focused on equal pay and those decisions are HR driven and monitored. I had 20+ years at BD Sparks and I am note conservative, white or male. Just saying...

There is no real diversity in Sparks leadership. A director of engineering told me that after an audit found women were in fact being paid less, the VP chose to keep it that way. The leaders are all white male and most seem conservative. The saving grace is most non-managers don’t seem too discriminatory.

Let's get it straight to anyone who thinks BD does not go out of the way to promote women in leadership roles over males and in the past offered pay bonus to under performers. Get over it, we live in the age where people try to leverage identity and blame groups to get ahead. Regardless of identify, we all have families to support. In terms of economics, BD has a lot of debt and they look for whole sale opportunities to reduce cost, close a plant, consolidate departments and like the previous CIO sell the IT department to an outside vendor, CAP. Regardless of your identity which should never be a player card to keep or get rid of someone, you are the product, build your skills. cause at the end of the day we sell labor hours to someone willing to buy labor hours. It not a guarantee, but value drives a better price for your labor.

I know! Let's just keep hiring interns that are relatives of existing employees. That's not discriminatory.

If you're not a hiring manager, you have no idea what goes into recruitment/hiring strategy, and you haven't contributed anything either. So maybe just shut up.

Right. Let's just keep hiring and promoting from the same pool of white males. Or else it's discriminatory to white males. Get over yourself.

@8pqf - Based on that response, sounds like you may have been a diversity hire and can’t admit or see it. Most of the high performing women I have had the pleasure of working with admit that they benefit from the diversity initiatives when that subject comes up. If you want proof that it exists, take a look at the make-up of the interns, any of the “DPs” and especially the TLDP’s. Can’t deny those facts! This is discrimination and it’s not going to end well for anyone if it continues.

while diversity is not the only factor for promoting and hiring people, it is a major factor...All the recent changes in my department are involving candidates from the diversity pool...100%...The mandatory annual goal for diversity and inclusion pretty much forces hiring managers to go for diversity, otherwise they would fail their goal.

Maybe you could be a better performer and wouldn't have to worry about getting laid off. Do folks honestly believe that people getting promoted and kept around are merely because of diversity? Oh please. Tell me what the percentage of non-white, non-male people is above JG4.

23 years... and I'm right there with you. I used to give 250% to BD but over the last 5 years the constant degradation of robust processes and third parties that need baby-sitting has crushed my motivation beyond belief. The ONLY way to survive is to stop caring. I actually wished I was part of the last round of layoffs, but sadly I have to stay. Congratulations BD.

I suspect part of the reason the rating system was dropped was to make it easier to quite literally promote “diversity”. I’m sure there are several factors that went into the decision but I bet that was one.

With the recent change in the way we conduct annual reviews (saving money by removing 4 and 5, pretty much), the only reason to perform well is to prepare for your future job which probably be outside of BD based on the absence of new opportunities there. Our best talents are leaving because there is no reward for them.
