I am not the poster that indicated opt-out but.....
I believe what that poster meant was that XOM cant make you awkwardly terminate people so hence "opt-out", refusal to do the requested tasks of communicator. Might be considered insubordination and grounds to be fired or PIP'd somewhere down the road but sounds like this stand up person decided to draw a line in the sand. Good for them!
That is one of the key takeaways for me personally from this whole mess is that we are not forced to do anything, we make choices to do things (yes, even those things our bosses tell us to do). At what point is the task being asked simply not worth keeping this particular job? Know the line and respect yourself. You got to ask yourself why I am doing this (not just XOM, but the type of work, profession, position, etc) and the answer might be not only to leave XOM but just do something entirely different. In that way, this could be a very exciting time for some; however, for most, it will s— and my sincere apologies to the impacted folks. Here is to hoping for the former.....
@7fkp+17ZfAoFm - don’t understand what you mean by “opted out”. I thought XOM selected you to be a communicator if someone on your team was to be laid off.
I was supposed to be a communicator, but I opted out after the training.
No idea of the impact on myself.
what are some of the "talking points"?
It was 2 hours long. Now there is a special communicator website that has a prerecorded session and a set of talking points with a script (pause for questions) on how to communicate the termination.
I get HR needs/wants to have consistency but if you don’t know how to talk to someone and let them go you should be on the list as well!
Empathy is live and well in this company.
How long was the communicator training?
What does garden leave entail? Is it essentially EXWP?
One item I would add is the process is made to be easy for the employee and the communicator is to own the message and be understanding.
After being informed within a day you will receive an electronic packet of information to your email address (both work and a personal one you provide).
May the odds ever be in your favor!
This is depressing!
@bkt+17ZfAoFm - thanks for the clarification!
There were 6 options and today’s was at 1. We had to mark it as private and no EVERY US supervisor was sent the invite.
Attending the trading does not mean you are going to be picked as a communicator.
@sye+17ZfAoFm - I appreciate that insight! At what time was the communicator meeting held today?
Trying to guess if my supervisor attended. If he did, then one of us (his reports) is going to be laid off.
I was in today’s session.
The communicator is the person doing the layoff.
The communicator may not be your supervisor if they are being let go as well and can be done in person or by zoom call
They initiate a survey which triggers the 60 day process, determines your last day on payroll (60 days from your notification day) and all the internal paperwork along with a prepaid shipping box if working from home.
HR would prefer all notifications are completed by the 11th but they have until the 15th if needed.
BL will determine if employees will work for the full 60 days or be placed on garden leave. You turn company property in and are expected to be on standby if needed. The communicator if they feel you need it can place you on garden leave at anytime based on your mental attitude.
It’s the basic framework for the process on how to let employees go. The communicator should also inform the rest of their team that they are not part of the program.
Instead of treating our employees like adults HR has decided to keep all of this information secret. I’ve told all my direct reports this already as it’s no surprise there will be a process to it.
It is fully expected that almost all will be off payroll by 15 Feb. Those BL that identified people needing to stay longer have already completed approvals for exceptions to this deadline.
I hope this helps take the edge.
I went to that once and layoffs were the next week. And it s—ed.
Will be presented so as to drive several of them to Voluntary.
Always the numbers.
It’s a script that says you do not have the skills values or performance and thus are being laid off. Not complicated, but EM drags it out...
Insider information.. Many people will be laid off in December
