Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Quietly ended educational refund program

I went to apply for the educational refund program just to see that it’s been “paused.” I am so disheartened by exxon. I joined the company three months ago and already I have experienced a massive layoff, removal of 401(k) matches and I can’t be reimbursed for school. What’s next?

There is no guarantee the program is coming back ever let alone in the next few years.

Getting an MBA in five years is literally not right out of school. Most MBA programs refer to the sweet spot at 3 to 5 years so the OP is correct. Telling someone to wait ten years on a sinking ship is terrible advice.

@4btl+17ZShLRD And in true ExxonMobil fashion no one stopped to ask the question why so many left. The problem is the people who left obviously say the managers afraid there may be a different answer.

Company found little return in paying for MBAs. Blame your predecessors for some of that. About 15 years ago, XOM paid for 15 employees to pursue the Tulane MBA program, and at least ten of those employees left the company after graduation. And anecdotally that trend has continued. My experience is that taking an MBA program right out of school offers little benefit anyway. Get some experience and take an executive MBA program in 10 years to really get the most of this type of program, and build better network.

Cheer Up Buddy; XOM not paying for YOUR education would be the least of your problems.........at least you are getting a nice fat paycheck and employed which beats the alternative.

Reality is, there are a lot of more than capable people standing in line willing to trade places with you while you are suc_ing hard on the teets of XOM and complaining. Yep, file this under the life is not fair category and don't let the door hit you on your Boo Hiney on the way out!

That person had a typo. It’s 150 credit hours. Even if it was 15, that’s a full semester of school. That can cost 10k+ easily. Assuming you don’t have to break it up while working full time. The lack of empathy you guys have is concerning.

“We are the best and brightest” - I love this line. I am a Contractor at Exxon and I have to say... Someone lied to you all. Between the egos, lack of any accountability and complete lack of any understanding of the various trades. I have to say, if you mo–ns believe you are the best and brightest, just know as Contractors se believe the exact opposite. Good riddance to all of the deadwood they cut, it will just make my job easier without all of the red tape.

I have never worked with so many “20 somethings” that don’t know their heads from their arse. Good luck when you get to the real world. Take these life lessons you learned at Exxon, lose the ego and actually learn your trade when you get another shot at your new job.

“Seriously? So the schools will not allow you to pay for your classes with your own money? I doubt that.”

I’m deeply concerned that you don’t know what “reimbursement” means. At what point did it not involve paying with your own money? Seek therapy.

tcz: "... I need the reimbursement to get my 15 credit hours..."

Seriously? So the schools will not allow you to pay for your classes with your own money? I doubt that.

If you are tight on money, sell the BMW and get a used Kia. Spend $12 on a Mr. Coffee and stop going to Starbucks. If you are concerned about how to take the coffee from home in your car, I suggest an orange cup that says "Do not remove from EMHC".

If you had multiple Fortune 500 offers and you chose EM, you are clearly not one of the best and brightest!

You work for an O&G company? What would you think would happen during a downturn? History has a way of repeating itself, lol. You must have been one of the regattable dumb ones we hired.

I agree. I had many fortune 500 job offers and I specifically chose exxon because of the 401(k) match, the pension and the educational benefit. I was sold a dream just to have the rug swept from under me and I’m supposed to be excited that I’m still employed. Like many of the people at Exxon, we had options. We are the best and brightest. I shouldn’t have to settle for concessions and be happy just for the sake of being employed. That’s beyond toxic. I don’t see any millennials or gen z sticking around long. The company is sinking quickly and is taking morale with it.

So sad how many mo–ns are on the site towing the line without actually being out of the company. You all have zero clue. Just a bunch of id–ts if you ask me.

I remember the days when they would give you a leave of absence and pay your way through law school if you were so inclined, with a verbal agreement to come back to the mother ship when you graduated. Yes, that was a while back for sure.

Lol. This is the covid world you are in you dumb–s. Hope to see your dumb a– laid off in the current world and try to swim your way out.

The ones saying they are xomized literally haven't a clue about the outside world aside from the cushy desk they have been sitting at. Blaming the culture on management and crying about lost benefits is also a farcry from understanding the outside world. Those that call others arragont are just in a state of denial on what is going on outside of exxonmobil.

The one that gets me is the reduction/removal of certain TDA benefits. You agree to move to Rattlesnakeville middle of BFE nowhere Texas with the understanding you’re going to get uplift, stipend, etc. Then 6 months later they pull that rug out from under you. If anyone reading this is considering going to Exxon, just swipe left instead.

Ask anyone who has been xomized and they will say hey don’t complain, be glad you have a job. It does not matter if it was used as bait during your initial employment interviews. Xom will always assume you should be grateful to be there pandemic or not. This is the arrogant and toxic culture you are in.

Wow. What a little b–ch complaining about being employed during the pandemic. I've known many new hires in other companies let go during all of this because of lack of work. Tech companies laying off because lack of sales. Airlines letting go because lack of flights. Millennials these days are so damn needy.

While they cancelled the benefit now they have been chipping away at it for years like all other benefits. There was a time when you could go to the best programs. No longer. There is a cap on the amount they will reimburse. Many people got MBAs and left in the pre-2010 days.

Hey don’t complain. The door is always wide open for other options. Be glad you have a job and that you are able to work with the best and the brightest in a world class company with a portfolio that’s unrivaled in the industry.

No one should be forced to be happy about their benefits quietly being suspended, even if they still have a job. Exxon is handling things terribly overall.

Damn! They should have kept the program open, but severely restricted the options. It would have been a great start to remove all MBA courses from the refund program. Based on those I’ve seen go through it for MBA’s, it was a total waste of money.

Be thankful you still have a job. Many don't. Most companies never offered an educational refund program. I know XOM has made some bad decisions over the recent years and is now seriously struggling, but so are many other businesses/industries. Most are not escaping a huge setback.

I wouldn’t be so upset but I’m an accountant and I need the reimbursement to get my 15” credit hour requirement to begin sitting for the CPA exam. This can push back my entire career progression.

That was a great benefit. Put me through an MBA program. A lot of companies are struggling now. Hang in there. Things will get better.
