Thread regarding Deloitte layoffs

9 Years of Hell

I worked for Deloitte for 9 years, 9 years of hell.. I had been a 1 performer at PticewaterHouseCoopers and at IBM. I was an Associate Parter at IBM.

Deloitte said that I had to come in as a Senior Manager prior to becoming an Engagement Director. That didn’t happen. As a senior manager I was blocked by other Senior Managers because I might steal sales and revenue from them. There were goals for Managed Revenue, Sales, and utilization.

The goals were meaningless because if you knew the right Partners you were able to be given the extra for Sales, Managed Revenue and utilization. If you were not in the inner circle you basically couldn’t make the goals, you are given a 4 rating and your asked to leave. I managed to get through 7 years and then the last 2 were hell.

Managing multiple projects and writing proposals, working 5 days on site and catching a red eye Friday Night , and then leaving Sunday. It was 70 to 90 hours a week. I was told it’s a long flight you can work on the flight. When a Partner decides that your not on the inner circle anymore, your dumped more and more work. I was told that it’s up or out by a Partner.

When I said to the partner I’m too old to make Partner or Director, do are you telling me I’m too old to move up and it’s out.. all sorts of thing go on behind your back when they are scheming to get you laid off.. there may be a couple of good partners but not many...

still toxic working evironment. People are by default working not together, everyone is fighting everyone. Have you seen the posts of partners visiting the pope - they even not realize what their smartphone thunderstorm says over all of them...

Same experience as a lateral SM who joined Deloitte. I wish someone had warned me before I joined them. Partners make hire and fire decisions on judgments and hearsay, very rarely based off performance. Anyone who stays working for them has very low self-esteem IMHO.

I worked there years ago. I was traveling with my boss. He wanted to work in my hotel room. I said no and was fired three months later for poor performance.

I worked for technology risk management in London and also saw too much of this bs. This game never ends, not even if you make partnership. I saw partners making a play (to take over clients on the excuse of geographical location realignment) at an ‘away day’ - with partial attendance and some of the parents not even invited to the table. The game never stops. For most people, big 4 is just a trampoline, and what matters most is having a solid exit strategy ( hence landing a job at a certain level in a preferred industry).

Was an SM for 6 years, met all metrics and top chart of performance. Let go in June, was never given a good reason. I was certainly not in the inner circle and can say that’s perhaps the number one reason. There are a lot of mediocre, mere talking PPDs...who like to play with SM careers.

Deloitte is a joke. The senior partners promote their friends - meritocracy is fake. Then there's also senior partners giving engagements to senior managers they want to make partner. Interesting how public companies like Goldman and JPM are being asked to do Diversity and Inclusion audits why not the Big 4 themselves. They need to practice what they preach. I'm tired of their rhetoric on diversity and preaching their ESG services, when you take a quick google search on their chagrin'ed work force the problems are evident.

Where is the stakeholderism in big 4?

You must be a seriously slow learned to have endured 9 years for a major management consultant and not realised its basically a sh– show for sociopaths. Seriously.
