BP files notices of possible worker layoffs in Chicago area

HOUSTON (Reuters) - BP Plc BP.L notified officials in Chicago and the state of Illinois of possible layoffs affecting more than 250 salaried employees at the company’s offices, BP said in a statement.

BP is also reviewing the organizational structure at its Whiting, Indiana, oil refinery 28 miles (45 km) southeast of Chicago.

BP’s U.S. Pipelines and Logistics office is located in Chicago and the company has a technology campus in the nearby suburb of Naperville, Illinois.

In June, BP Chief Executive Bernard Looney said the company would cut up to 10,000 jobs, or 15% of its 70,000-person workforce, worldwide.

In October, Reuters reported only 2,500 people had taken voluntary severance packages offered by BP and 7,500 people worldwide would have to be laid off.

GBS in Naperville is close to 300 roles alone going to India and Hungary, ETA completion April 2021. However, my guess is that 30 S. Wacker is going through cuts too.

The 250 employees is just the threshold for Illinois WARN, I wouldn't take it to mean how many layoffs in the area

"A “mass layoff” under Illinois WARN is a reduction in force at a single site of employment that is not the result of a “plant closing” and results in employment losses during any 30-day period (or, in some cases, during any 90-day period) of 25 or more full-time employees if they constitute one-third or more of full-time employees at the site, or 250 or more full-time employees."

This news coverage is just the Illinois WARN notice- it'd have to be a separate WARN notice to Indiana but there's nothing on their site yet

Thanks for posting. I don't know how many Chicago area employees there are. I know they've alerted the F+ grades yesterday and G and lower grades will be notified between now and end of the month.
