I know this might sound like a stupid question but please bear with me. If I understood this correctly from a convo I had with a friend, severance is not actually mandated by law? It's on the company to decide if they want to give it out or not? If that's true and the situation in the company keeps worsening, can there come a point in time when people are going to be laid off with no severance?

Severance is not law In the US but is policy in certain corporations. The recent NSI lay-off was unethical but legal.
C-ap.
