Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

WFH status

Just curious, and this may have already been asked, but I’m not following this forum as closely as I had before, will the way we work change when the pandemic is over?

Meaning do you think we will continue to be able to mostly WFH (3+days a week) since it doesn’t seem to be a problem for several jobs? Or will we all be forced to drive back into office for inane meetings... again?

No more WFH. Only NJSH (no work, stay home) or WFKL!

Given the spike in COVID cases in Houston, I am surprised management is not instituting a temporary WFH.
I know colleagues who are older or have underling health issues who are very scared of coming to the campus. But they know refusing to come to campus even for genuine reasons would mean getting laid off or PIPd.
XOM is all talk about safety and caring. They don’t give a damn about employees.

@1ojj+17YQ4f5L, campus Vista upwards if $4B in 2013 dollars. It was one of Rex's awesome decisions, executed by such stars as MB later of EMIT and NC later of EMCC & board. There is no way they are admitting defeat. You will collaborate there till you die.

If you think Houston cases are bad look at what is happening in some of the production offices. We have way more cases as a percentage.

Zero chance. Management is so pathetic they can’t figure out technology to work remote. Have you seen any high level managers do simple tasks like advance their own slides or start a Zoom meeting? If we are a technology company we have the wrong managers. Probably still use a VCR when they are at home.

We have WFH flexibility in Singapore. However, most prefer not to return as seeing the managers in office just spoils the mood. Best continue to hide behind the WFH wall, some of us take the chance to go for job interviews while working from home.

I agree there will be a push to have us back on campus but the way COVID cases are on the rise, not so sure it is going to happen on the timeline the Company thinks it will.

Darren Woods will do whatever Billy Gates tells him to do, he says WFH and go to office occasionally. https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2020/11/17/coronavirus-bill-gates-says-more-than-50percent-of-business-travel-will-disappear-long-term.html?__twitter_impression=true

It seems to me that once Covid is over, there will be efforts by the govt to pressure businesses to still work from home when possible for environmental benefits.

Exxon is too much of a controlling company to willingly let people wfh outside of a pandemic. They built a $1 billion campus and want to see you there “collaborating”. Even though with the 50% rotation right now there is a significant carbon footprint reduced and quality-of-life realized but that is not what they care about, they want you at the campus in your chair using the open concept to collaborate and be productive.

Teach the pumpers Excel and CAD. They already know SAP. Close the Offices. The field hands who make this company operate still have to work. Why not everyone?

Exxon mangers and MOH have long minimized the virus and contested whether it’s even necessary to abide by CDC guidelines.
If it was up to them, we’d be all cramped up on campus without masks.
Their failed experiment in May didn’t teach them anything.
Fortunately, Harris County has been doing what science advices.

Typical exxonmobil being 2 decades behind everyone else.. Sending work to other parts of the world has been very common for just about every other large company. Just shows how nimble and agile this company is to succeed. Especially when you have managers that think "if it ain't broke, why fix it?"

WFH proved to EM that "work from KLTC is feasible", and "work from India" is also feasible". Be happy if you have an office to go back to. I believe many will not. Maybe not right away, but eventually. Sad.

In January the country will likely shut down if not before.

Most are afraid to go back to office. Not because of covid, but prefer not to meet their bosses and have their own time for job interviews. I see many doing that now.

I think the meetings are the problem in that equation, not the WFH or go to office. But I expect we’ll be back in the office full time as soon as COVID is largely behind us.

Based on the meetings I've been pulled into, expect a full return to office with the same workplace flexibility that existed prior to pandemic. So, on occasion you'll be able to work from home but it should be 5%-10% of your working time and non-routine.

I'm a senior manager, not exec, as frame of reference for my comment.
