Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

If you hear that someone from the management team (Div Mgr, Dep Hd, Grp Hd) that PIPed you, got laid off

Would you be:

  1. Happy and satisfied that karma did its job (they picked you to be PIPed afterall, and it’s their turn - only fair).
  2. Feel sorry for that person (after all they did what they were told to do).
  3. Nonchalant.

I hope the management of my group/division/etc. remain as long as possible.
They are a drain on the company - true.
Draining the field. That's why.

Nothing would make me happier than my supervisor and their boss getting the exact same humiliation they doled out to me I pray every day that karma strikes them both and strikes them hard. They are both worthless drains on the bottom line anyway.

Got a new supervisor who had no respect for me or the value my work added to the organization. I have ZERO doubt that I was targeted because I was a female over 55 and retirement eligible. I will hold it against that supervisor forever and I would love to see his happy a$$ fired!! I never ever want to see his face again!

I was PIP'd over the summer and I do not hold any animosity towards my former supervisors and managers. Honestly, I had a lot of respect for my last supervisor and I know she didn't have much control over the situation and I was an easy person to identify since I was a recent hire with less than two years at XOM. The decision had already been made a couple of layers above her. As for the upline managers who laid out the criteria for winners and losers, I don't like what happened, but what else were they to do? Dallas said they had to cut so they cut. It didn't matter how it happened, it wasn't going to be pretty. Now I do have a lot of issues with the culture that top XOM leadership promotes. I think there are lot of good people in the middle ranks who would like to change it, but they don't wield much power and they either play the game or hit the road themselves. This culture will continue to proliferate until Dallas gets a clean sweep of new executives who choose to take things a different direction.

Are there still expats in AP (Singapore) in this business environment?

No managers took a hit in UIS, despite glaring failures. I don’t feel sorry for the cogs, they are on it for themselves. Self-promotion, compliance, and survival is the game they play.

Personally, it would make me sad. For managers that aren’t used to addressing hard topics with their employees, it is probably incredibly stressful to have to be the deliverer of bad news. Then to get laid off immediately after is like rubbing salt in the wound. The senior above the manager should let him/her and their employee go themselves.

There have been retirement eligible managers that have been PIPed out. They are pretty much leaving quietly, and I think the main employee body think it is a true retirement....but I am not so sure.

Supervisors wish they had the power people assume they do. The rank session isn't a forum for your supervisor to present what they decided for your ranking. They have two minutes to explain what you did. The others in the rank session then determine where you end up. If others have seen you do good things you go up. If others have been disappointed you go down. This is why there is so much talk about exposure. If anything the unfairness built into the system is that some roles just naturally have more exposure. If you are in a role where other organizations aren't seeing your work you are at a huge disadvantage.

Yes it feels good to blame someone. There are likely very few cases where your supervisor actually wanted to fire you. Most cases the supervisor realizes you are a good person who doesn't deserve to be fired. They also aren't in a position to do anything about it. Do you think the supervisors were asked what the PIP target should be or if we should keep paying the dividend? Of course not. Supervisors know you. They know your personal situation and how bad it will be to be fired. The decision is taken several layers above them by people who you are just a number to. You aren't just a number to your supervisor. Not saying you should feel sorry for your supervisor but you also probably shouldn't hate them.

I'd be happy to hear @OP was PIP'd and/or laid off. What a dumb question.
