Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

Should I leave Shell after 5 years?

I am a JG5 engineer in the US at 1 of the 6 refinery Shell will keep with a year left with SATP. With everything that’s going on in the industry, and getting an offer from a tech company should I take it? Is there any future for engineers at Shell? Most of new energy doesn’t need engineers and I have no bearing or insight on whether engineering roles will increase/decrease in downstream/upstream.

Any advice is welcomed.

Tech company has 15% higher base salary, bonus, and RSU but no pension and lower 401k match.

If the company is AWS, then you will be running away in 1 year. I have heard terrible things about it.

Oil major are en route to death by the ESG and shareholder addiction to dividends.
Transport is going Electric fast as solar and Wind + battery are cheaper than gas already..
run before it's too late..

Just remember that at Shell, when they decide that they don't need you, nobody will be able to save you without throwing their own people to the wolves - which they won't do. If you can get out on your own terms with a decent salary, cut and run!

assuming the tech company will require relocation to a HCOL area. how much net total compensation increase will this be? unless the RSU's will provide another 25% in yearly total comp, you will be taking a paycut.

is this for a program manager role, or are you remaining technical? Is this FAANGMULA (good branding will be worth the paycut)? Lots of missing information here, advice is dependent on your role at the new tech company.

Shell is a dinosaur company. Its stock price hasn't reflected the longterm downtrend in its viability.

A most important factor is, in which company will your career lasts longer. Period. No loyalty anymore nowadays.
