10,000 staff replaced with 10,000 day rate contractors? You know we are all going to get replaced with Wipro and Wood managed services... it’s all just a massive scam.

In my department they're outsourcing, not bringing in contractors. Outsourcing to the same company that had (and botched) a previous outsourcing arrangement. It's all cyclical. Not sure how they expect to save money but it's not going to be my problem. Onward and upward!
Everyone including Exxon and Chevron is going to contract work. Oilfield is to volatile these days to continue paying large salaries, pensions, and million dollar shares to greedy CEO’s.
There is no such thing as a quality employer. The ones who kept there jobs will be cut in the next decade and be forced into contract roles. Just part of the game.
I agree with the action to make shareholders happy. But, it really didn't increase share price by any significant amount, which I'm sure horrified Looney. Yes, if you're asked to leave, don't burn your bridges because there's a great chance you'll be asked to come back as a contractor. Make sure they know about your interests. Lets face it, no one knows how to do the job for BP than you do.
Job cuts and restructures are the normative in the corporate world. BP has been lucky in that major layoffs haven't hit the company before. Best advice? Don't be bitter. You need to appropriately grieve, but what you really need to do is to translate all of your energies into adapting yourself and finding a new job or way to make a living. Anger toward BP will only serve to s— the energy out of you and make you miserable to be around for your family and friends. S— it up and get busy. You will come out of this alive in the end. And change can be a very positive thing in life too.
I suspect for the moment you will get a better job as a contractor outside BP, since as you suggest, BP is currently committed to Wipro/Infosys et al. However after a couple of years, or when the body shop contract runs out, the story may be quite different.
Oh, it is. 10,000 cuts are to make the shareholders happy. Contractors from what I see in my department are not getting cut. I imagine the draconian numbers that we have to hit will be be too much in a lot of functions and those roles will be replaced by contractors. Many of them being the folks they just let go. If you aren't selected, still be the model employee that you are and start politicking to be brought back as a contractor. That's my strategy anyway. Good luck all!
